my dad and I just bought a new '05 f350, crewcab, longbed, 4x4 with the 6.0 powerstroke in it. we will be doing quite a bit of heavy towing with it evntually, and i was wandering what you guys would say about a break-in period for the engine, before we start really working it, we need it pretty soon for work. any other basic advice you'll have on the engine would be helpful. i dont have much experience with the diesels since we have never owned one. havent had a chance to browse through the forums yet but will be doing that soon.
we've only had it a day and i can already tell that im gonna love the power/torque this thing has and i havent even hit the throttle hard at all yet.
my 05 F350 KR had 676 miles on it before we hitched up the fifth wheel and headed West,, now on the trip and just turned the 3k mark,, broke my 03 F250 7.3 in the same way,,
must say the tow command works like a dream,, notice the 6.0 hunting far more than my 03 7.3 did when it comes to pulling small hills,, seems to like the sweet spot around the 2200 rpm area,,
plenty of power and we are around 21,000 lbs down the road,,

Do you have the transmission in Tow/Haul mode or normal mode? Just courious if you have tried the different modes and noticed any difference pulling the small hills.
bgrover,
I pull up mountain passes and have found that as long as I am at highway speeds (60-70mph) I do not need to gear down with the tow/haul. Only use it when I'm not on the highway- And to start-up & slow down when pulling. 03 6.0 CC with just over 41,000 miles.
Be sure to read the diesel supplment in your manual. Many of your questions will be answered there.
With that said however, disregard the section that tells you 15 qrts of oil are nec. @ oil change. 13.5 qrts is now typical or low to medium level on the hatch marks on the dip stick. Ford has finaly succumbed to this with the following broadcast message to it's dealers: Oil Level Check Tip:
When checking the oil level on the 6.0, the vehicle must be on a level surface and the dipstick must be fully seated into the tube to ensure an accuarte reading. Do not add oil if the level is above the "MIN" line on the dipstick. Broadcast Message 1512, 1574.
have run in the tow mode and out of it and same symptons on the small hills,, have actually had it cough before downshifting and a couple times I just went ahead and pushed the pedal down to help it make up its mind,,
will be back to the dealer in Florida when we return to see if there are any codes generated,,
