Broken Gear Selector '95 Bronco

Hi all!

Great forum. I have a self-induced problem. I was getting ready to head out to the woods to hunt deer yesterday, when I suddenly found that I could not get my Bronco out of park. I found a thread with some good ideas on solving that, but my self-induced problem is that I snapped off the shifter when I tried to "pull" it into gear yesterday. Since I have AOD, the lever on the column is really just a hollow tube with the AOD button on the end. Anyway, I know I'm a dumb#$% for pulling so hard, but does anyone know the real name of the part and where I might find one? I've been trying all kinds of different names and sites but no luck yet.

Smile Update..

Well, turns out it is called a Shift Lever. It cost me $37.00 from Genuine Ford Parts online. I'm also pretty sure, after reading several posts, that my problem was caused by a leaky brake sensor on the master cylinder. I know it has been leaking ,and I guess it finally shorted out becasue I have blown fuse 13. I'll be heading to the dealership to buy a new brake sensor (Can't find the booger online anywhere) and I think I'll be back in business.

Welcome, glad you got the problem solved. If the brake interlock is being stupid yeah, you will have problems getting it out of Park.

I had this issue shortly after I bought my bronco. if anyone needs to n=know how to get it into drive when this happens here is how. turn ignition to just before on usually is the edge of the key faces up and down with one of the broad flat parts facing you. then shift to neutral and fire her up then shift to anything you want except park or you will have to start the whole process over again. Now, I do have a question for you Rrobben how did you diagnos the issue? Also once you replace the sensor under the hood and the fuse under the dash check your third brake light on the top will most likely be burnt out, usaully is anyway. then you should be good to go. Just wondering about the diagnosis, it took some serious wiring research for me to find it and about 10 fuses. Just curious what method you used.

Actually, I think I read your thread on this forum, and that tipped me off. I had noticed that I a leak around my brake sensor under the hood about 10 days ago. It wasn't too bad, so I didn't really worry about it, but I did top off the fluid level. Also, since I bought the truck last December the cruise control has never worked. Anyway, when I read several threads about how the brake sensor can short out, which causes fuse 13 to blow, I checked and mine was blown. I can't say for sure that this is the problem becasue I haven't replaced the sensor yet. (That's on tap for Saturday). I'll let you know if this fixes it, and I'll be sure to check the 3rd brake light for problems too.

Okay, thanks. I had already fixed mine before I ever found out about this website so made things a little more difficult for me. This has actually be great learning for me just to make sure my ideas are right or just to make sure what i'm reading or being told is correct. Good luck.

That happened to me.
I then took it to the Transmission shop to fix the lever and this is what happened...

Problem Solved with new Brake Repair Kit

Whew! Problem solved. Turns out the little sensor at the end of the master cylinder is now called a Brake Repair Kit. The part numbers on the box are 1L1Z-9G652-AA and 4W1T-14A411-AA. It was all of $15.00. This is an updated part from the original, but once I replaced it, along with the 15amp fuse in position 13, I was back in business!

Thanks everyone!
