Hi there! i have a 410 (390 block with 428 cj crank (( 1u stamped on crank)) and i'm going to be putting in a '64 f100 4X4 with a 4 spd attached to it. My question is what type of manual flywheel do i need to couple the engine to the t-98 manual transmission? do i need a special one because of the 428 cj crank? externally balanced flywheel? not sure where to go here. would appreciate some help. thanks!
Because the 428 crankshafts are externally balanced, you will need to get a flywheel to match, unfortunately relatively expensive usually. The 428 flywheels have an extra chunk of iron on one edge. The vibration damper, however, is the same regardless of FE engine(unless you get a SCJ, I think?). Another alternative that many people take is to get their 428 crank rebalanced internally so they have more choices of flywheel, any FE 360-390-427 would do in that case. But that requires a fair amount of Mallory metal to be welded into the crank, which is a bit expensive, and I'm personally not crazy about the idea of much drilling and welding on a crank that's becoming hard to find these days.
I got a McCleod flywheel for my 410, and had the crank balanced with it, and it's worked out real nice. However, if my rememberer serves me, it was about $400 for that wheel, so a little breathtaking. I'm pretty sure that Hayes also has one, and you might get lucky finding a used somewhere.
Those are your options as I know them. Steve
Marty, you don't need a special flywheel. The idea that you HAVE to have a 428 'wheel with a 410 or 428 crank is a misunderstanding that just won't seem to die. It ain't so. You can use any FE flywheel. But isn't the balance differant on the longer cranks ? Yes, it is. How does Ford or Mcleod or any other manufacturer get the needed balance from a 'normal' ( zero balance ) flywheel? They either weld a weight on the edge ( auto tranny flexplate ) or drill some holes in just the right place on the outer edge of a manual tranny 'wheel. It takes about 2 minutes to do on the balancer. We have done dozens of them. The balance has to be matched to the crank, but you don't need a rare or exspensive wheel to do it. You can also internally balance the crank if you want. Usually, on a 428 crank, if you use some lighter weight pistons than stock, you don't need to weld on the crank, but trim some material off the balance pads on the crankshaft counterweights. This just points up the benefits of this, and the FordFE forum: you can always learn something no matter how many times you've been around the block, so to speak. Dino, where were you before I put down my money for this fancy wheel? Steve
I've gotten lucky in the past at Summit Racing......on the return table there has been "NEW" FE/385 series flywheels for $50!!!!!! Bought two of them so far. The last one was still up at $150 and left it for someone else. I have one spare now.
Both of my 428's are internally balanced so any wheel will work. Makes it a simple to replace process if something goes wrong.
well, thanks for the info guys. so i guess what i should do, is get my crank tested to see if it is internally balanced and if not, match a flywheel to it and balance both at the same time?
