Exclamation Glow problems, I think!

OK HERES THE STORY. I WENT TO GO START MY TRUCK (87 F-250 6.9L) AND IT WOULDN'T START. I NOTICED THAT THE GP RELAY WAS CLICKING ON AND OFF LIKE 5 TIME AND WOULD STOP. I REPLACED THE RELAY AND IT STILL DOES THE SAME THING, THE ON/OFF CLICKING.

SO HERES THE QUESTION IS IT THE CONTOLLER THAT THE RELAY SITS ON TOP OF OR IS IT THE RELAY AGIAN, OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Does it come on for 10 seconds before the clicking? If so it's normal. If not, you may have some burned out plugs.

That's a little short, if it's cold outside. Check the glow plugs for 'opens'. Pull each wire off and test them with an ohmeter or test light. The test light is easiest, simply hook the ground clamp on a POS battery post or alternator hot post, then touch each glow plug connector and you should light it up. One or two bad plugs will shorten the cycle time and make it hard to start.

Thanks I'll give that a try. Would bad glow plugs make the relay click on/off like that?

Yes it would, the new style system (87 & up) uses resistance of the glow plug circuit to time the cycle. Less working glow plugs reduces the resistance of the circuit.
