I tried to send an e-mail to a buddy from work. So, I fill out the required fields, and add the attachment. As it turns out, the attachment is a 20 minute video, so it is pretty huge. Well now, 3 days later, the thing still isn't sent. I deleted the huge file 2 days ago because I noticed a big slowdown. I also tried to go to my outbox and delete the outgoing mail, but I got a "Program Not Responding" and O.E. won't let me do anything about it. I tried again yesterday, and again today. I tried working offline several times, still nothing. Now, when I tried to "exit and log off identity" I got the "program not responding" again.
So, how do I get Outlook Express to respond to my command, and not freeze up so I can delete the stupid outgoing e-mail? I can't send or receive anything with it right now.
Ctrl-Alt-Delete will open the task manager. This will allow you to shut down Outlook express. Then disconnect your web connection, reboot and reopen Outlook. It won't be able to send the email since you will be offline. Go to your outbox and delete the email.
what happens when you ctlr-alt-del? and have you shut down and rebooted ? maybe going into safe-mode might let you regain control..if your running xp you could go reset the system back a couple of days.
on edit: just seen rocky's idea....thats a good one about disconnecting the your web access..that should do the trick

Okay, got that, except how do I disconnect a cable connection without actually disconnecting? I've tried all that, and when I get to the outbox, I can put the cursor over what I want to delete, then I get the not responding.
Edit: I have shut down and rebooted several times. I've got XP Home Edition. I don't see how adjusting the calendar is going to do anything though.

you can go to device manager and disable the modem from there, and system restore allows you to go back to before you had a problem but you lose all data from that point foward
onedit : go to your help files ,type in system restore and read up on it before using it....just a word of caution..
System Restore overviewSystem Restore is a component of Windows XP Professional that you can use to restore your computer to a previous state, if a problem occurs, without losing your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e-mail). System Restore monitors changes to the system and some application files, and it automatically creates easily identified restore points. These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time. They are created daily and at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed). You can also create and name your own restore points at any time.
Notes
Restoring your computer does not affect or change your personal data files. For information about backing up personal data files, see Backing up files and folders.
For an overview of the other recovery technologies provided with Windows XP, see Recovering Your System.
For more information about System Restore, see Understanding System Restore.

If you have it set so it isn't going to send, can't you go into OE and just delete it now? Or does it start sending again when you open OE up? I've had to maually shut down a couple times to get something large to quit sending, but was able to get into OE and delete it afterwards. That happend a couple times on huge downloads someone sent. They'd time out the mail server and never seem to get loaded. I finally called tech support and told them to delete the mail.
When I try to delete it, I can't even get that far. The closest I can get is to the outbox folder. That's when it shows me "Program Not Responding." When I get to the outbox, I can't get out of it, I can't right click, nothing. The hourglass shows up. All I can do is close the window with the red x box. And then I get "You chose to end an unresponsive program..."
The tech guy suggested I set it so it won't send on startup. I did that. So it's not sending, but I just can't delete it now. I think part of the problem may be that I deleted the file that was attached. Probably a big no-no causing me the grief I'm experiencing now.
Too add to my frustration, I can't get a hold of my computer geek cousin through hotmail because MSN Messenger is down now too, for who knows how long. Probably doing system maintenance or something.
ARGH!!!

Save any emails and email addresses that you want and then go to http://www.eudora.com/ and download Eudora. Then go into Control Panel and uninstall OE. Install Eudora, click on "File" and then "Import" to import your settings and address book from OE and you probably wont have any more problems
Ok maybe that's not the kind of advice you wanted but it worked for me
For some reason, it sounds like your OE is corrupted. I have never heard of the problems you are having with it and Ive used it for as long as Ive been online. Have you done a virus scan or scanned for spyware or hijackers? If it won't let you access parts of it, that raises some suspicions to me. Can you ininstall and reinstall OE? I don't think I even have a special disk for OE..I think it came with XP. A different mail server may be a good idea to try out, but you have to change your settings to make Eudora the default email, I believe.
