Crankshaft Pully
Hey guys, I'm trying to replace my timing belt and I am having a bit of trouble getting off the crankshaft pulley. Does the bolt turn the pulley as well? Any tips for getting it off? Also what would you guys say to an under-drive pulley, has anyone tried this?
Thanks
Mike

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Sep-02 AT 12:47 PM (EST)]Un-hook the coil wire and put the correct size socket on the bolt, then put your breaker bar on so that it rests on the frame rail. After that just bump the starter and it should break loose. No input on the undersize pulley.

Crankshaft Pully
I'm in the middle of changing my timing belt on a 94 Ranger 2.3l. (see above post). It all went easy until I got to the crankshaft pulley. I found out later that the old pros usually bust that nut loose first before doing anything. This helps to hold the crankshaft in place by things like the regular serpintine belt. Luckily I have a stick shift so I put the truck in gear (try reverse or 5th), put on the emergency brake, and blocks all the wheels. I used a big breaker bar and slipped a pipe over the handle for more torque. Pull back with all your might with one hand and wack the breaker with a sledge hammer. Worked for me. I also sprayed a little PC blaster on the nut head. I'm at the point where I don't know if I have to take off the INNER timing belt cover in order to remove the belt. The manual says remove the outter belt cover, then a few steps down it says remover the outter cover again. Do they mean the inner cover, and do I have to completely remove it or just part of the bottom to wiggle on the new belt? Also, will it come completely out without removing other pulleys because it looks like it goes behind them.
