I have a 1999 explorer that has some sort of problem. Wife came home today and just as she rounded the last corner in the subdivision, the truck started to make a whirring noise accompanied by a metallic noise that I thought was a heat shield. I drove the truck around the block, looking for trans problems, 4wd problems or the source of the noise. Checked all fluids which were clean and topped off. Noise went away as quickly as it had appeared. Later we drove across town and the o/d light started flashing. Owners manual says vehicle "needs service". Is this light in place of a "check engine" light?
Shut off vehicle, restarted and light was off. I manually shut off the o/d switch, but after 15 miles of driving it started flashing again. I could shut the vehicle off and restart it and the light would stay off for a while. Does anyone know of common problems associated with this light flashing? Is it like a "check engine" light that monitors 200+ items or is it trans or transfer case related??? Help!
The o/d light flashing is usually indication that something is wrong with transmission. Simple and inexpensive fix is to disconnect battery and then reconnect. That will clear code. Drive and if it comes back on again take it in. I had simlilar problem on my '95 and it worked for me.
yes but that might not be the case. i was doing 90+ in my 2000 once cause i left the stove on in my house and i did a 360 without flipping the truck and my transmission got messed up really badly. my extended warranty covered it however.
I had mine flashing for a year or so and turned out to be torque converter lockup solenoid. There was a whole bunch of them that were crimped incorrectly. Ours is a 98. There is a TSB on it however it looks like it only applyed to 98. You may want to go to http://www.alldata.com/TSB/9920_mo.html. I did a google search on it and figured out what is was. Later found out it was a covered on California Emissions warrentee. Easy part to install. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/n...e=1&p=2079563#
Are there instructions anywhere on how to replace the lockup solonoid?
Also does anyone know how to get any of the TSB documents (particularly the general recall ones) that are shown on AllData, without haveing to pay for it(ie. through Ford)?
You maybe able to get the parts or service people at the dealer the make you a copy. Or look at the locator for shops in you area that subscribe to the Alldata Professional service. Alldata is only 24.95 a year and 14.95 for renewal. That is cheap compared to helminc.com. I can only see the data for the cars I payed for. May not be the same problem on yours. Do a google search on O/D light.
On my transmission it is the front solenoid on the drivers side of the valve body. The clip holds three or for the solenoids in and they sometimes are spring loaded so good to hold them in with your finders while you change the solenoid. You have to loosen the valve body bolts that hold the clip.
