Does anyone know how the hell to hook up an external tach.
i have looked at the damn thing for hours and hours and cannot figure it out. I know where the hot and the ground and the accesory wires go but i have no clue where the original tach source is. So if someone could tell me how or give me some good ideas i would greatly appricate it.
For '93 and '94, depending on
the size of the motor, you can do the following. 2.3L - off the PCM
(powertrain control module) go to pin 4, which is a tan wire with a
yellow stripe. Or, go to the ICM (ignition control module) and splice pin
12, which is a tan wire w/ yellow stripe - this is the same for the 4.0L,
too, except for the ICM connection, it will be pin 2 instead of 12. For
the 3.0L, off the PCM the tach signal will be pin 4, which is a white
wire with a pink stripe. Or, you can go to the ICM, and splice into pin
B, which will be a tan wire with a yellow stripe. Now, from '95 to
present, you can splice into the PCM, which should be mounted on the
passenger side firewall. You will need to splice into pin number 48,
which will be a brown or tan wire with a yellow stripe, to obtain your
engine RPM signal. (2.3L is = 2 PPR; the 3.0L, 3.8L, and the 4.0L is =
3 PPR)
I am new to this so bare with me. I have a 1997 ranger 4cyl and I'm having the same problem with the tach thing. I have purchased a shop manual and can hook up the tach but,,,, I'm only getting a 2 cyl pulse, not a 4, so instead of a reading of 1500 rpm mine is only 750. Ive tried to tap into the ECM at the tach lead, and have tried it at the coil packs and the reading is the same, and it is not the tach because my engine anylizer gets the same reading. can a resistor be placed between the two coil packs since they both put out a 2 cyl pulse, so the correct reading can be rec'd as a 4, or do I have to buy a motorcycle tach for a two cyl engine???????
I saw your advise about the different wires to tap into but, will that produce a 4cyl reading that I'm trying to get. Ok now it's your turn, did I miss something?? Oh I have this drivetrain in a 1929 model A five window coupe body and it has been doing very well for me, but I would like a tach so when I blow away those rice grinder civics and accords I know what kind of r's that she's turning.
