Finally hooked up my Predator tuned 5.4, F-250 to my 10xxx lb. 5er camper. Could not believe the performance!!! I have the five spd. manual and it had enough power that I felt like I was always in one gear lower than it actually was. After I installed the tune, I could tell some improvement but when I hooked to the trailer is when it really came into it's own. Thanks for all the great help selecting the Predator.
I initially went 93 octane and that's what I plan to tow with but I recently was getting ready to "performance tune" for 87 octane and put some 89 in and I'm not spark knocking at all. I may try 87 as per your experience but around here, I can buy 89 octane for the same price as 87. Thanks for the info...
It should advance it quiet a bit on the 93 tune, maybe a tad if that on the 87. you can't lean it out much at all on 87 and the factory computer is just a crack away already...
Did you go to prem gas?? I hooked mine up tp my 99 and no pinging on reg gas..Truck feels good though.
Two things: its probably pinging and either you can't hear it from inside the truck or the knock sensor is pulling back timing. You really shouldn't temp fate by running 87 octane on a premium fuel, its a good way to hole a piston. Its very possible not to hear the pinging from inside the truck --- the guy in the shop next to us had pinging on his Dodge and didn't know it until he had a friend drive next to him who heard it.
Timing is advanced an average of 3-8 degrees depending on a variety of driving conditions and factors (there are several items that are factored and calculated from various tables and scalers during driving).
I know what you are saying Ken. I've been listening to pinging engines for 35 years. This one isn't and I'm wondering if I can use the predator to see if its working or not.
If I went into modify tune and adv the timing until I heard something that would be one way I suppose. What should I see when I go into Modify tune in the timing area's should it be in the center?
Okay. The Predator will not give codes for pinging per se, but you can use it to bump up the timing more. Take the timing up a notch at a time until it starts to ping (especially under load) on premium and then back it off one notch. That will be the setting for optimal power.
I'm sure Diablo didn't do the programing tests on my date engine 3-3-98, they prob chose a 2000 or 2001 mine is 30 hp less than all the others maybe has less compression and less timing adv than the others so in the perf tune it won't ping on reg gas..Just a thought. I have been hauling heavy loads and it runs real good. I might increase the timing but on 87 and see if it will start to ping to see where i'm at.
I have been modifying the Diablo Tune after talking with Brian at Diablosports. He pretty much agreed to bump it up until you hear a ping then back it off. I advanced it 2 deg at a time and drove it for at least a day. Today I went to 10 deg. advanced and still no pinging. I hooked up my trailer at about 3500# and still no pinging.
I don't understand spark advance very well. I thought my gas mileage had increased but just checked it today on a 3/4 tank fill up and mileage was down to 13.4 from about 14.5 on 87 octane and regular gas. I have been driving it hard playing with the shift and other parameters so this is part of it.
Will I get the best towing mileage with the spark advanced just below pinging? If that is the case will power suffer? I'm going to tow my trailer at about 5000# from FL to upper WV the week of Thanksgiving and would like to have it tuned for economy unless it costs mountain climbing power. Also, should I lean it a bit in the 2000-4000 foot mountains or will the computer still monitor and do it automatically?
