I have a '94 EB that I recently got back from a tune up. I had asked them to look at the rear window because the switch and key would not work. They cracked the back end and said that my wiring harness was just 1 big short. What I'm wondering is how hard would it be to actually re-wire the whole back end, insted of trying to find/buy a new harness and have it installed. Also if it is possible where can I get non-haynes shop manuals to possibly help in my predicament?
Are you talking about the harness for the tailgate alone, or the entire back half of the truck? The harness for the tailgate is available as a stand-alone item.
JBG lists the one for your year at $140-145 for a brand new OEM harness. Check with local Ford dealers you may be able to get it cheaper. If you think its the entire harness then it will be easier in the long run to just replace it considering the window switch is hard-wired into the harness and the connectors used are expensive to buy and wire individually. Its really not that difficult to replace it. Undo the connections inside the gate and disconnect the harness under the rear of the truck. You will need to remove the drivers side taillight assembly to get the harness through the holes in the body. The window switch will not pass through the holes in the body or the gate so you wil have to pull the harness up and out through the inspection cover in the T-gate. Be certain to make note of the exact routing of the harness when you remove the old one since the window needs to be free to move without hanging up on the harness and the defroster connectors attach to the lower edge of the glass.
Is the harness fubar were the tailgate closes ?
Take a knife and split the covering and take a peek.
Had one truck like this and just spliced the wires were they were bad.
Wires were wore through were they go through the tailgate from use.
before you replace it look for the short.
I was gonna look for a short first anyway, the only concern I have is that if I manage to get the glass down it may not go up if I can't find the short. Is there another way to force it closed if I am unable to fix it for the time that it's down?
Yeah, you can jumper the power straight to the motor connector to get the window back up. I agree with MinnManBroncoFan, the harness is known for getting screwed up in the jamb area. There should be a rubber sleeve over it in the jamb in addition to the jacket that runs the full length of it.
