Silent truck

Quick question to everyone. When I completely let off the gas, pretty much at any speed, and there is no load on the engine, my truck goes completely silent for a few seconds, (longer at highway speed down a hill for instance) then the idle clatter comes back. It is at idle speed and completely silent for a noticeable amount of time before the usual clatter returns, is this normal? I have seen similar symptoms on this site resulting from a bad EBP sensor, but I don't have the white smoke or any other problems, just wondering if the total silence is normal.

It's more obvious on the 7.3s/T444E trucks (louder engine; wider range of conditions that allow it) but it's just shutting down the injectors when there's no reason to be wasting fuel. I bet it does wonders for emissions too! I remember all sorts of crazy "overrun condition" contraptions on gas cars in the early emissions era to handle just this sort of condition. (Spring-loaded throttle plate was the most annoying - "NO! You can't engine brake! Bad boy!")

Yeah, the 6.0 and its VGT definitely add the cool turbo whistle to the mix of sounds when decelerating with no throttle!

All diesels do that. It basically shuts the motor off for big decelerations to save fuel. Cutting the fuel is the only way to slow a diesel down, so if it has to slow down real fast, the governor just shuts it off for a bit.
