Hey y'all.... my 1999 F150 Off Road 4x4 SuperCab 5.4L sounds like its dragging a chain from its front right suspension. Has anyone solved this problem? It doesn't seem to be damaged, as its been there since I bought the truck a year ago, but it is rather annoying when the windows are down. Seems to be present all the time, but is most noticable at lower speeds when I have the window open and the wind noise doesn't mask it. On a seperate note, is there a way to grease the rear leaf springs? Those have been creaking up a storm lately... Thanks!
1997 F150 Off Road 4x4 SuperCab 4.6L I got the same thing goin on, ever since i bought it this summer w/ 168k miles, EXCEPT i notice it on the left front.
I asked your same question about the chains, right after i bought the truck, and got 1 hit and all they told me was ti ride the brakes lightly and see if that gets rid of it, incase it is somethin w/ the brakes bouncin around, that didnt solve mine.
I sort of had the same type of sound coming from my front wheel area also. It sounded like bells ringing or silverware clanging, or even chains dragging.
Only noticed it when windows were down at slow speeds and usually after going over some bumpy roads. It was not the brakes.
After removing the passenger front tire, i noticed that the noise was coming from the center lock nut shell that the cotter pin goes through. I was able to reproduce the noise by tapping the wheel studs with a rubber mallet. I used some 3M black rubber cement to re-secure it in place. The factory adhesive had failed after only 6 months.
The drivers side is still quiet and the side i repaired is good also. Hope this is your problem, because it is an easy fix!!! Good luck, keep us updated.
zman764,
Leaving it alone will not cause any problems so long as it is the same problem that i had. Keep in mind that you may have a different problem and it may need immediate attention....safety first!
