Satisfying Bronco Day

After many months, I finally fixed the gearset in the drivers side window. Then I went to Burger King and went through the drive through (instead of having to walk in because my window wouldn't go back up) and ordered a hamburger even though I wasn't hungry. It was good. Then I went for a drive with the window rolled down, with my arm hanging outside, fully confident that the window would roll back up after I was finished. It did. It was good too.

It's amazing how we take these things for granted. It is always satisfying when you get the vehicle up to full operation. I worked on mine to remove most the little rattles outside and inside, and got the map lights working, fixed the ignition switch actuator, turn signal switch. Great vehicles when you have everything working good. Glad to hear that the operation was successful.

Do you have power windows? Mine is doing the same thing. It rolls down fine, but on the return back up it will stop about 2/3 up and I have to pull up on the glass and push the button and it will go up another couple of inches and then I have to pull up again, this time making sure to get my freakin fingers out of the way so I don't smash them in between the glass and the door. What did the parts cost you to fix this?

25 dollars at Autozone for the window motor gearset. what has happened is that plastic portion of the gear had shreaded. this is a common problem which has been discussed in great detail many times in this forum, but here is a short synobsis of the repair.

1. tape the window to secure it's position or it will slam down after you remove the window motor, which can be a bad thing if you have your hands in there at that time. do this with at least 4 strips of strong packing or duct tape secured to both sides of the window, going over the top of the door.

2. remove inner door panel. mostly plastic fasteners but there is 1 screw in the top of the arm rest. buy some new fasteners while you are at autozone because you will undoubtedly break some. a package of them costs 3 dollars. facing the inside of the door, the motor lies to the bottom right.

3. remove motor. you can only see one of the bolts that secure it to the inside of the door. but, ford has conveniently placed 2 punch marks OVER the heads, which mark the place for you to drill. i think i used a 7/16, but honestly can't remember. the goal is to create a hole that is large enough to allow you to use a nutdriver you get the other 2 bolts out. remove all 3 bolts and unplug/remove the motor.

4. remove the gearcover by removing the 1 screw and pulling off the cover. most likely you will see many shards of shreaded plastic. if you see this then you should feel quite good, as you have successfully identified the problem.

5. remove the broken gearset by gripping the old metal gear with vise grips or a pipewrench until it pops loose. then scrape out all of the old grease and broken plastic. now, squeeze the gob of grease that came with the new set into the housing and install the new gearset.

at this point, everything should be a snap and a reverse of the removal. replace the fasteners that you broke during the door panel remova! or you will be rattled to death. there are some detailed pics of this procedure available on this site. do a search on this site for window motor and you get a ton of hits.

yeah it's really not that hard of a job. i had replaced the motor a few years back so the holes were already there. i remember, however, that i was stumped when i had gotten to that point, that of how to get the motor out. the solution came after much consternation and in a vision while i was sitting on the crapper...not kidding about that one haha. anyway, i did the job in about an hour yeaterday but in my case the bolt holes had already been drilled out. if you have any further questions, feel free.

Those kits look great, I wished they were available in Canada, or at least where I am from. I had to buy the complete motor from the boneyard. Its a difficult job to not get cut in the confined space if you have big hands .

Matt, I think that Autozone ships to Canada; Advance auto might as well, for future reference at least.
