I have a 5.0 and even with a new belt it still sweaks when i turn it on and allot of times when i turn the AC on. Is there any way to adjust it like in most vehicles? or am i screwed over because if the auto tensioner
the squeek maybe from something else like water pump going out, alt going out or your tension pully maybe going out as well. determine exactly where the sound is coming from and we can go from there.
I'd check your Idler arm pulley bearing first. The bolt is threaded backwards by the way, to save you some time, then it just slips off. Use a very fine pick of some sort and gently pick the edge of the seal until it comes off the bearing. Then load in the grease and push the seal back in. There is also a bearing in your alternator that can go bad. The bearings aren't even that expensive, but I'm a cheapo! Best of Luck!
Most likely, I do believe, would be the AC clutch assembly but the alternator is a distinct possibility as well. Unlikely to be the PS pump, as a bad bearing would leak fluid and generally not squeak.
Being that you own a '96, consider which items you haven't recently replaced as a source first. On my '88, every item with a pulley has been replaced at least once, excluding the smog pump. the reason I mentioned the a/c clutch is because mine squeeked like crazy prior to seizing up completely, the same with one of the alternators (it seized up too).
Background:
I just replaced the belt on my 351W, which quieted it a lot. But there is still some noise, most likely coming from the smog pump according to a mechanic friend.
Question:
Is there a vendor(s) who has a specific belt to bypass the smog pump? Or do I just measure the serpentine system somehow and purchase a shorter belt? Or is it as simple as buying the belt for the 302 and putting it on all the pulleys on my 351?
