I had the dealer order a sliding rear window for me since the XL didn't come with one. As it was being installed, I was talking to one of the service managers about wiring up the control module. This type of cruise unit used a connection to one of the wires in the ignition control module to sense engine speed. He knew which wire that was and for $10, he made the connection for me and left the wire for me to complete the cruise control install. This was all off-the-record of course and he gave me the typical "not covered under warranty" speech. It was a big help to me since I figured he knew what he was doing. The rest of the install went together easily and I’ve had no problems with it since I put it in. It's great on long trips!<O

>Manual transmissions can be tricky and there are safeguards in place. The unit I have supposedly has a logic circuit in it that senses if the engine speed rapidly increases like what would happen if you pushed in the clutch at highway speeds with the cruise control engaged. It's supposed to disengage when that happens but I always just tap the brake pedal to disengage.
I had put another JC Whitney unit in an 89 Ranger 5 speed, 4 banger. That system actually had a brake switch that was connected to the clutch pedal through a pulley connected to the floor/firewall. That would disengage the cruise control by tapping on either the brake or the clutch pedals. I liked that system real well. It actually sensed the physical movement of the pedals instead of an electrical signal from the brake lights.
I had the Ranger 11 years with no problems at all. I've had my F-150 since it was new and the cruise control still works great. Most after-market cruise controls come with good instructions that help you with the hook-up. They’re pretty well documented and you can call the manufacturer if you have questions.
Sorry for the novel but I hope it helps.
