Engine (block) Heater Questions

It was getting a little chilly and since i'm now using my truck as a daily driver, i decided to try the engine heater. i plugged it in before going to bed. The next morning was COLD. I got in and she fired up like she'd been running all night! WOW.
Here are my questions:
What is being heated?
how much energy is being used?

thanks

I find that in order to heat it up to a point where it cranks easy, 1.5 to 2 hours is needed. I have done less and have not really noticed and improvement in the ease of starting.

I usually aim for 1.5 to 2 hours. Anything less does not really seem to make a difference. If it is really cold, I leave it on all night and pay the electric bill when it comes in.

Sorry for the double post. It wasn't showing the first time so I retyped it. I think I am better with mechanical equipment than computers.
