For the last week or so, when I restart the truck (2001 7.3l 4x4 auto trans) after a 10 minute drive or so, when the outside temp is below 45 degrees or so, I get a grinding noise when turning the truck over. Sometimes I need to turn the key off and try again several times before it will catch, sometimes only once, and sometimes it will start first time.
Could it be that the 3 year old batteries are going, or do I have a starter on its way out? Batteries seem strong otherwise and the terminals are clean. I generally have no problems with the first start of the day. Is there something else I could look at too?
Not knowing anything about your truck, it sounds like the starter is getting old and not retracting. Check batteries with a volt meter to see if they are within range with the truck off. Next check cables going to starter. If they check out you need to get a closer look at the starter and see if its loose or cracked. Re-man starter isn't much and not that difficult a job to swap out. Good luck.
I would also agree with sy5adm1n that it sounds like the starter is not retracting and causing your grinding. Your local auto parts store can test your starter if you take it out and bring it to them.
