Got a few ?'s. Have 2001 ranger XLT, 3.0L, 6cyl, ext cab, VIN-U.
First, my check gas cap idiot light keeps coming on. Checked all of my vacuum lines and replaced my gas cap. Anymore suggestions?
Secondly, when in PARK and NEUTRAL the engine can only be revved up to 3K RPM's and won't go any higher. Is there some type of limiter causing this? Makes funny sound when at 3K RPM's.(Like it wants to cut out)
Last one, my gas mileage stinks. Average 13-15. Had a 94 T-bird with 3.8L V6 that was getting 19-20 MPG. Thanks guys.
Bjon,
It's a TRUCK with the aerodynamics of a BRICK. Look at the shape of your 94 T-Bird vs your Ranger and you'll see what I'm talking about. If you want better MPG you have to clean it up as best you can. I.E. Cover the bed, lower it for less wind resistance, etc. I did these things and my MPG went from about 17 Hwy to about 21-22 Hwy. Of course it cost me over $1,500.00 for the fiberglass cover and lowering kit. But then I did it for the looks and not to increase the MPG. That was just a bonus.
Thanks for all the info guys. I have more amplifying info about the computer codes. The code came out to be a PO457. The first time it came I had very little gas in the tank. The second time it was almost full. And now it came again with 1/2 a tank. The guy at the parts store said I may want to look into the evap system.? Also, could you explain a little about this limiter this truck seems to have. Are there any manuals for this year? Can't seem to get a hold of one. Thanks.
The rev limiter is there so you don't over rev it in neutral or park. Not something you should be doing anyway, it's not healthy for the engine. Your engine is designed to work under load, not freewheeling. Like starting a car that's been in storage, it's better to run it out on the highway for a few minutes rather than idle it for a couple hours with a brick on the throttle pedal.
The computer is actually cutting the fuel and/or spark so you don't go beyond 3000 rpm.
