My '96 Explorer has been doing the flashing 4wd lights thing since I bought it so I've been reading up on this forum and other sources before I got under for a look.
So I saw the electrical plug was disconnected from the shift motor, problem solved.
Just disconnect the battery for a while, then reconnect and go for a test drive.
Now with the shift motor reconnected, I get a banging sound on a quick take off, especially if on the dirt. This happens even on the auto setting.
I get the same noise when reversing especially if turning.
Banging sound at the start - then it quits - or does the sound keep going?
First thing to check would be the u-joints and CV's. Make sure they are tight and not worn. After that - might try to diagnose if you can pinpoint the sound down to a specific location. I'm no 4wd expert my any means, so hopefully some others will have a more definite thought.
Yep, banging sound when you first take off in forward- then it quits, gotta accelerating a fair bit to get it to do it.
In reverse, it seems to keep going as long as you're going, but I haven't gone that far, just backing out of a parking spot.
Hmm, CVs. I suppose the the front CVs would put up more of a racket when turning and 4wd engaged.
It makes no sound when the shift motor is disconnected, but it makes the same noises when the motor is connected no matter where the dial on the dash points to.
I.ve got to stay clean for the next 7 hours, I have a look at it then.
