Are there any major differences in performance and ride, in the same year 98 Explorer and 98 Mountaineer, with the 302? I thought the two vehicles were exactly the same.
Essentially, the rides would be the same IMO. The Explorer and Mountaineer are based on the same UN105 (internal code name) frame and chassis setup. The 302 V8 is the same engine in both platforms. Aside from the Mercury 'maybe' having more creature comforts, I would think they both would handle the same. Although, I have a buddy who has a '02 Mountaineer (UN152) and has driven my '01 Explorer with the 302 and has said mine feels tighter....
They are the same vehicle with exception to some cosmetic differences, so I don't see why one would ride better than another one in stock form. Now if one had different shocks and tires or something like that - I could see a difference - but not when they are setup the same.
Thanks for the information on that. What horse power does the cobra X have these days.

As of right now - its at about 400-440 rwhp - depending on the last minute details of the setup. I am in the process of putting in a new crate engine, along with the Eaton and a few other toys. We haven't finished yet and are thinking of adding a few other things, so I don't know the total yet. Once its done, it will be off to the dyno for a little fine tuning...
At this time, I've decided to stick with the Explorer electronics, so that really limits what I can do. I went with the 302 crate that has the E303 cam and GT40Y heads. The strokers are stronger engines, but they build a lot of power higher in the range than the Explorer electronics support.
I've got a couple of other projects going also (non-automotive), so I had to decide on a dollar amount to contribute to the Explorer. I wanted more power, but also want to finish some other things also, so for the money range I am lokoing at, this was the best solution. Going to a stroker would have put me way over the budget I wanted to stay in because to do it right and get the most gains out of it, I would have had to dump a lot more cash than I wanted to. I think I'll be happy around 450hp - plus my other projects will get done also.
lol... no bother at all. I just noticed you are in Woodstock. Last year I moved from Henry County to Salt Lake. My parents still live in Jackson (south of Atlanta).
My Explorer is actually in Georgia right now getting the engine work done. We are starting to get snow here, so I don't know if I am going to come get it when it is done, or leave it out there and have the paint job done there - then get it in the spring. I really don't want to get it fixed - then drive it here through all the snow/salt/etc. But I also am gettig a little ansy....
