I have a 97 4x4 Expedition. The steering squeeks very loud. Seems to be coming from the drivers side near the steering box. You can shake the steering wheel from side to side with the engine off and hear this loud squeek. Could be the universal joint on the steering shaft. It is right there in that area but not quite sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Also, check the pitman arm... they are prone to making noise too. If it is the pitman arm, don't buy a new one. Just get a grease 'needle' and use it to inject grease into the seal.
OK, I am not a great mechanic, with the help of this site I have done more than I ever thought possible. I read somewhere here or otherplace on the net that the Expeditions have a hollow sound in the steering -- sometimes only when you turn left. The solution posted was to replace with synthetic steering fluid. At first I shrugged this off thinking it was a synthetic salesperson , however I will be darned the noise went away, haven't heard any steering noise at a stop or low speeds at all. I am still not convinced it was the synthetic oil, maybe just the oil change itself fixed it. But the end result is "no noise", give it a try but please validate this through some of the experts on the site.
I have a 97 Expy and I had the same problem with the squeek, it sounds kinda like rubber rubbing on metal sound, and the ps hose sprung a leak and I had to change out the hose, well when I replaced the ps fluid I used synthetic fluid that was advertised to stop squeeks so I used it and the squeek is no more.
