I need to buy a Tonneau cover. It will need to be secure, so I need to pick out a solid cover. After looking around, it appears that the roll top covers such as the style Pace Edwards makes is right for my needs. Does any body know of drawbacks with this style. I was wondering if they rattle? Is there a specific brand that is better than the competition?
The roll ups have two disadvantages.1. They have a large box in fron to store the drum the cover rolls up on, you lose space. 2. you have to drill a hole through the box for a drain tube. This is for water and snow that gets into the drum to drain out.
Check the weight capabilities of the cover incase some one sits on it or sets a heavy box on the top.
I have a Leer HArd cover that is removable and locks. Lifts like a trunk lid.
Best part is that they are paintable, so if you don't like that flat plastic look you can change it. I will be picking one up in Missouri while I am driving through.
Hi Chuck. I had one of those Pace Edwards locking roll-tops on my F350 for two years. There's a number of problems with them, however I never found anything else that fit my needs and sense of style quite as well.
The rails they have to install down the sides of your bed significantly limit any weight you can rest against the side of your bed. 1000lb round bale of hay ruined mine and they had to be replaced.
The aluminum slats that allow it to roll can get bent, especially where they roll back into the canister. Makes it hard to open all the way.
As 99F150 said you have to be really careful about what you put on top of them. I had mine for locking skis in in the winter and a couple inches of wet snow was enough to knock it out of the rails.
I had the lock replaced 4 times in two years and it's busted again. The aluminum locking bars are too flimsy.
Like I said, it was pretty expensive for the trouble it gave me, but I never found anything I liked better. The fibreglass ones look even better but are less practical (just try to have a bobcat dump a load of gravel in your bed). The roll-top stayed looking good other than scratches on the rails.
Good luck, if you get something different from the PE, I'd love to know what you think of it after a few months of use.
I was told the ls11 is the better one on the market. I ordered one today for about 750.00 with ezlift and carpet underneath, also a battery operated light when you lift it up. looks sharp
Do a search and check out K-Cover. I have a 04 SCrew with the two-fold model and it has been great. The cover is lockable and although they don't guarentee it not to leak, mine has not leaked a single drop. I paid about $550 and would buy another in a minute. Good stuff...
