I did a search using a few differant phrases trying to find info on how to ID a 351W. I just bought a 84 F150 4x4, the emissions sticker says 5.8 but I'm pretty sure the engine has been taken out and either rebuilt, replaced, or just cleaned up. The engine it's self is a lot cleaner than the rest of the engine bay leading me to think it's been removed. I'd just like to assure myself the right size engine was put back in.
If it helps any it has a 4brl Holly/Motocraft carb and all the emissions stuff as far as I can tell. Any giveaway clues to determine a 351 from a 302?
To determine if it is a 302 or 351W look at the front of the drivers side head. The upper PS bolt hole will be just a tiny bit below the block/head interface on a 302. There is about a 1 1/2" seperation on a 351W due to the taller deck height.
A 351W/302 has the water gooseneck make a right angle turn to the intake. The 351M/400M go straight down.
The 351W HO with 4V Holley/Motorcraft was available in 84 as an option, so it's probably still the original engine, or at least the right engine for the truck.
