How do you ID 351W

just picked up a 76 F100 short bed. Orig engine was a 302. Seller said it has a 351W in it. I'm sure it is a 351 but what is the best way to ID it as a 351W?

a 302 has a skinny intake. stretch your thumb and pinky finger out and you can touch the valve covers unless your a midget .
a 351 w is wider with a taller deck height

this is the 351w in my 01 mustang

It's not a 302 in it. How do you tell it a 351W from a 351C or 351M?

a 351 c and m are basically the same block except the transmission bell housing pattern.

351c is using a 302 / 351w bell housing bolt pattern

351 m shares its bell housing with the 460 its tall and flat on the top.

the 351 c and m have a integrated timing cover and a flat plate behind the water pump and the 351 w and the 302 share the aluminum timing cover behind the water pump

the front of the block is the easiest way to tell if you toss up a pic i can id it for you.

see the mustang water pump were it has a extra 2" plate behind it that's a Windsor
a Cleavland or mod will have a flat steel plate behind it it and wide squared off valve covers

see how the dizzy is farther forward in the 351 c/ w /400 mod and the water neck bolts to the block instead of the intake

"Dizzy" is short for "Distributor".

Here are some acronyms you may encounter:
IMO - in my opinion
IIRC - if I recally correctly
JBG - Jeff's Bronco Graveyard (vendor)
LMC - Long Motor Company (vendor)
NPD - National Parts Depot (vendor)
DC - Dennis Carpenter Reproductions (vendor)
BOTP - Blue Oval Truck Parts
ICM - ignition control module
SCS - Super Camper Special
CS - Camper Special
SC - SuperCab
NSS - neutral safety switch
OP - original post(er).. the thread's author/starter
PO - previous owner

Back to the thread!...A 351W will have a rib cast between the block and distributor hole. 289s and 302s do not have the rib.

A 351W also has one-inch taller deck height than a 289/302. The term "deck" refers to the top of the block surface on which the cylinder heads are mounted.

The 351C, 351M & 400 valve covers have 8 bolts; the bolts holding on the fuel pump are vertical:

The 302 & 351W valve covers use 6 bolts; the fuel pump bolts are horizontally arranged:

There is also this (from Franklin's images):

looks like they are both 351M both in question have 8 bolts on valve cover and fuel pumps are both vertical bolt pattern. Both blocks are a litte different so I assume it a year difference. One I believe has a rib as was mentioned but the other doesn't. If the valve cover bolts and fuel pump bolt pattern the clincher then they are indeed 351M. Was hoping one was a Windsor.

That engine pictured in your album wasn't originally installed in a truck (which means it's not a truck block casting).

I can tell by virtue of the fact there's an oil dipstick near the passenger side (right) valve cover & alternator.

Trucks with M-block engines had their oil dipsticks in the driver's side of the pan sump, and also had D7TE block castings (a bit strengthened in the main bearing area).

that could very well be, never thought of it that way either but the other engine I have is somewhat different yet has the 8 bolts onvalve cover. I will try to get a pic of it up later today maybe you wouldn't mind looking at. Both these trucks I bought for parts for my 75 Hi Boy which is in terrible need of a new body ubfortunately it is a narrow frame and the 150 long bed with the other engine is a wide frame but both have good running engines so will sell them off and keep looking for another body and keep the glass etc that is good and junk the rest.

the other engine pics are up under album 76 F150. The one reply to my post was about a rib cast which I believe is just to the right (looking at pics) of the distributor. This one doesn't have that casting. Difference in years I suppose? Both engines have the oil dipstick on the passenger side so I guess both were originally for a car? or perhaps the oil pans are for a car? instead of a truck?
