F250 help.

Hello. I'm new here, and it looks like you have a Great site. I am on the verge of buying my first F-250. It is the 04 XLT Fx4, v8 diesel, supercab. I have Never owned a diesel truck before.
What are some of the pro's and con's ?
I fell in love with the truck after driving it, but is there anything about the F-250 that might make me look elsewhere?
I know these questions may be silly to some, but I'm just looking for help.
Thanks

Hello, Jim, and welcome to FTE

I can't say from personal experience, but I have 2 borthers and one son with the 7.3, and a father and one son with the 6.0. They have no problems with their F250's and, as far as I can tell, the 6.0 is an awsome engine, a compliment to the greatest truck ever built.

I have the V10 - of course I'm the rebel in the family.

BTW - Be sure to check the Read First topics at the tops of each forum you visit.

You will spend more on maintenance on a diesel than a gasser. You will get better gas mileage on a diesel than a gasser. There are pros and cons on both types of engines and I am positive you will see that once more people post on you question. I have a 2004 F-250 V-10, the only problem I've had is a vibration on acceleration and that was covered under warranty. The truck does exactly what I want it to do and much more. IMO all Superduties are great trucks, you just want to find one that will suit what you intend to use it for. If your going to do any kind of uphill pulling/towing, I would stay away from the 5.4. Good luck with your decision, you really can't go wrong!!

I have an 04 F350 because we tow a heavy 5th wheel and needed more GVWR that the F250. IF you are getting an 05 then the GVWR problem with the older super dutys won't be much of a concern. If you are getting at 04 or older then the F250 doesn't have enough GVWR to tow 5th wheels over about 26 feet or so. So for only about $800 more you can get an F350, check out the loads you will be carrying before you buy. My diesel subercab 4x4 long bed weighs 7,800 lbs with full fuel, 200 lb hitch 150 lb tool box and me 200lbs so if I add my wife and dog we are close to 8,000lbs so an 04 F250 can only carry another 800lbs! Not much. Hope this helps. I sure love mine, it is a great truck!

Diesel engine costs about 5K more than other engines. Diesel fuel is currently significantly more expensive than regular gas. Diesels pollute more. Ford diesels are loud. Diesel has turbo lag off the line (Not that I try to very often, but I can't really spin tires off the line despite 325 hp). Oil changes on a Diesel cost about $90 bucks or $50 if you do it yourself (about 15 quarts). You'll probably get 16 mpg with the diesel but people will mislead you into thinking you may get 20 mpg. Diesels have two batteries that will need replacing rather than one. That said, I love my diesel.

JimE, welcome to the site. You will love the F-250, especially if you 6.0 has all the fixes in it. Its a great engine. Diesels are great vehicles, highly modifiable, awesome power and very good fuel milage. And other than what was posted above, I tow a heavy 5er, see signature, get 12-14mpg towing it, get close to 20mpg commuting, done by hand and not the overhead computer. I see myself moving up to a larger 5er in the future and I don't have any worries that it will handle it. Once you drive a diesel, you won't go back. Diesel is a little expensive now, but it will come down.

I like the 10plugs and the Diesel, probably could be happy with both. This is my first diesel and I will probably drive a diesel forever. I am addicted to the GROWL when I start it up in the morning. If you do your own maintenance these badboys are not too expensive to maintain, they come with a 5yr,/100,000 warranty on the engine. There are a lot of us happy PSD owners out here.

Good luck, keep up posted, and welcome to FTE...Deac

I have a 02 F250 SuperCab 4X4 5.4. If you are going to transport more than two or three people on a regular basis, I would go with the crew cab. The extended cab is very uncomfortable for most passengers. I wish I would have opted for the diesel just because its so cool! But I am happy with the 5.4 . I have no real complaints about the F250 other than the firm ride, but that's the way a heavy duty truck with 4 leaf springs is supposed to ride.

JimE welcome to FTE

Jim, I just bought a 2004 SuperDuty 6.0 Powerstroke Crew Cab that had 32000 miles on it. I pull a 32' travel trailer. I am getting 18.6 mpg without the trailer and 9.6 with the trailer. This 6.0 Powerstroke is an awesome engine. I really like mine, I like it even better that I got it used, in good shape, for a really good price. It was just like new and not really broke in yet. The owner got stupid and wanted to go back to a Dodge.

I have worked on enough Dodges that you couldn't give me enough to fill a Wal-Mart parking lot IF I had to drive one.

Ok I'll shut up but I really am happy with my F250.

Jim, I just bought new a 2004 Super Duty F250 FX4, 4x4 crew cab with the 6.0 PSD. I'm only working on my second tank of fuel, but the first tank gave me 17.5 mpg with mixed driving. I had the same thoughts as you concerning the Power Stroke, but in my neck of the woods that is the way most dealers order them in. A number of friends have the SD with the diesel and they love it. Good luck with your choice.

One thing I enjoy about the PSD is I can go well over 400 miles on a tank before fueling. If we are traveling and it is highway miles I can easily go over 500 miles. I fill 'er up the neck everytime.
