my abs light came on yesterday. i did the paper clip thing and it came up with code 63. what exactly does that mean...and where shold i go next with the testing. also i was trying to test the relays but im not sure how they work...could someone tell me how they work and how to test them...
i have a 1996 bronco with 4WAB...5.8 auto...thanks...
A relay is (for all intents and purposes) a remote switch. It has two terminals that are the coil and two that are the switch contacts. Most automotive relays are N/O (normally open). In other words, the circuit is NOT energized until the relay is energized. By supplying power POS and NEG to the two "coil" terminals, you should hear the switch contacts close (click) inside the relay. If you don't, test between the coil terminals with an Ohm meter or a simple continuity tester. If there is continuity across the two terminals, the coil is good. If not, the coil is suspect. If the coil tests good but you stil have no close on the switch contacts, the contact points internally may have failed or are too corroded to allow good electrical continuity. Since most factory relays are sealed the only thing to do with a bad one is to replace it.
There are more complicated relays in some systems but this is the basic concept. The relays you are dealing with will have either four or five terminals. the fifth terminal will have the same identifyng terminal number because it is a N/C (normally closed) contact for the switching. N/C = the switched circuit is energized until the coil is energized, then shut down when the coil is energized.
This info is true for most all automotive relays.
As to the code 63, I don't have the list in front of me at the moment.
Not 100% sure about your's but many on this forum have corrected the ABS light by replacing the sensor on top of the rear axle. Of course, it didn't correct mine but I hear people all the time say that it corrected theirs.
Call Ford or someone and they will tell you the code or search the internet. It's out there somewhere.
hey greystreak92...
how do i test the relay...im not sure from the electrical plan which terminals to test. all the relays are 5 terminal but in the box there is only 4 connectors. thanks alot...
