I'm putting a new big block in my 83 bronco XLT. It currently has a 302 w/ 3spd auto transmission. I want to put a pretty big block in, what are my choices/limits? Also, what hood would look good on it? I want to get rid of the stock hood because of some rust and hail damage (and other various dings). What do you guys suggest?
How much will a new engine, trans, and hood cost me? It's 4WD if you need to know..
The 460 is a common swap for the Bronco and there is a LOT of info about doing it available. You may need to swap trans too and possible upgrade front suspension. Not sure about the hood information. I know there are fiberglass aftermarkets available but they are quite pricey. I only wish K-bar-S was still in business or at least I knew how to track someone from the old company down. They made a really cool fibreglass hood that tapered down... actually improved visibility down over the front. But I haven't a clue how to track one of these hoods down today.
A 460 would be a good swap, along with a C-6 tranny. You will have to get the C-6 that fits that motor, as your's will not be a direct bolt-up. New motor mounts needed, too. Guessing about $3000 &-up, just depends on what you pay for the motor/trans (around $500) and what you build into it. A cowl hood would look sweet, about $400 plus paint. I paid $50 for my hood from a junk yard, and cutting the hole for the shaker was free. The paint cost about $300.
hey i dont have a 460 i have a 351w but i picked up a cowl induction from jc whiteny they look cool, havent had the xtra $$ to paint it yet check out my gallery im sure they have hoods that fit your year of bronco
You're saying 3k for the entire engine and tranny together? That's cheaper than I thought. I am getting a new paint job AFTER I get it primered, I was looking at cowl induction, but i didn't know how that would look on a big bronco like mine. I'm seriously thinking about getting a 460 for it, one of my friends says go for the 351w and put cleveland heads and intake on it but I'm not sure which way I want to go.
If you can do most of the rebuild yourself, I would think $3,000 is a little high. Mine is 69 Tjet heads, 72 block and cast dished pistons- 9.0 compression runs 87oct gas with no problem. There is plenty of clearance for everything- some accessory brackets modified to get AC to work/fit right. C6 used for trans.
My belief is that early cleavland heads just create problems- 2V heads detonation prone and 4V heads have ports too large (high RPM required to get mixture velosity up).
