What the heck is going on. Is there some sort of conspiricy going on against Ford trucks and SUV's?
First you have the Explorer debacle which keeps getting worse,
Then GM starts outselling Ford F-Series in 2001,
Then GM gets JD Powers top quality award,
Then this report comes out on Ford F150 crash worthyness..
"In 40 mph tests, the institute characterized the safety performance of the Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram as poor. In the case of the F-150, the institute said it's about as "bad as it gets."
Hey guys, you all know I'm a GM truck guy but i don't necessarily hate Ford's. It's just that Ford has been having so much bad publicity lately that I think it's finally starting to get the better of them.
Don't all jump ship at once, we don't want GM to be in a sellers market, do we? hehehehehhehehehehehehe
YIKES! Man that happened at 40mph! When I followed your link, Clatter, to this article upon seeing this picture I thought the truck had been driven into a concrete block at high speeds, ie 60mph+. If this crash test was performed at 40mph this isn't a good thing. But with the media these days it's hard to tell whether or not you're being lied to by the media through industrial monetary compensation, in other words being bought off. Then again it still makes one think, do I want to by a 2001 F150 and see this happen to my family, NOPE!!!!
I sure hope my '94 F150 doesn't crumple like that if I get into an accident. It scares me to think if I get in a crash with some rice burnin' banger car, it will take out my truck. Man this is nastier than watching the donkey show!

Now normally i give everyone a chance here, but ####### your a darn fool if you think your chevy is gonna do much better than that ford under the same conditions, and if you only seem to show the bad publicity that ford gets none of the bad publicity that gm gets im sure you can find a plethora of gm vehicles on the worst crash worthy vehicle list, dont be so one sided i know you own a chaby so you think thats the best, but c'mon they are all created pretty equal from the factory......if one automaker was so superior to the others there wouldnt be 3 automakers bottom line
Hmm, interesting, Fords become less durable and more unsafe soon after adopting more GM (front end, suspension mostly) and Dodge-like (the looks, basic design) features to save money and attract a bunch of morons who have no business driving a truck. Anymore, people want a truck that looks good at all costs and then they whine when it can't take a hit. Nothing's built tough anymore! Man I miss the good ol' days.
I miss the good ol days too. Should I mention about those chevy frames that get bent out of shape when they are being clinched down on the car haulers.
i am a die hard ford fan but after lookin now if u buy anything that's a 1/2 ton or under, you're just buying the name, they are almost all the same now, at least with the older trucks u had a TRUCK but now u have a wannabe truck if u buy a new one, i would never own a gm product except maybe a 2000-2001 escalade. but i'll stick w/ the 96 and down fords. although i do like the dakota 5.9 r/t's boy those trucks are bad, never drove one but drove a buddy's w/ the 5.2 it was fast. but like what i was saying, they're pretty much all the same, made in us, parts made in japan, so ur just buyin a name.
I wonder if the American automotive industry has come back full circle. The American citizen had to put up with this same type of crap bull**** quality (vehicles crumpling like paper). American automakers made huge and heavy cars that got crappy gas mileage, sucked oil left and right, and had ##### safety standards. Granted if one was involved in a car accidental 30 years ago, the car you were driving would be ok but the occupants in the car were in bad shape. No airbags, seatbelts didn't do ##### to stop or slow you down and the cars didn't crumple to help absorb impact forces. Around the late 60's and 70's the Japanese entered the automotive industry. Lo and behold the Japs had designed a better car all the way around. Just say it "Japs and better cars". Now before you open your mouth and accuse me of being a traitor to the American truck, do some thinking and say "Would I want to drive that ##### 2001 F150 and get involved in an accident with a 2001 Toyota Tundra?" Hopefully you will say NO! If not then put your girlfriend or wife and then you child in the truck with you! Hmm thinking twice eh?
Just to reinforce what I am saying, the crash test for the Toyota Tundra was unbelievable. The occupant cage didn't flex or deform at all. Hmmm... I wonder if American automotive makers are getting lazy again!
So what do you guys think! Are some of you still brand loyal or has your loyalty been shaken! Mine sure has. Screw Ford if they are making crap like this! My well being as well as every human being out is in jeopardy when you drive something like that. If Ford can't do it, then get out!!!!!!!!!

Was I the only one that read the whole article? It states a little farther down that in more real world tests the Ford got a 4 out of 5 star rating from other testers. I agree that these tests are subject to media spin and hype. It is like throwing an injured fish into a shark tank. Remember all the testing(?) done on Chevies a while back with their inferno gas tanks? Anyone hear of one of those going up in a mushroom cloud lately?
I've got one for you, lets drop a 500 pound block of cement on top of that new Duramess diesel from 4 stories up and spin up a story about how the passenger compartment was compromised.
Is that the drive shaft that is bent in the picture? Looks like something I want to spend 30 some thousand on. I think I'll keep the 78. At least I know at 40 mph I will live and maybe even drive away.....
How many blocks of cement like that do you know of? If you know of any and are stupid enough to run into them, you deserve to be hurt.
A fair test would be to slam into the back of a parked car like a neon or focus at 40mph. The car has some give, and will MOVE when hit, dampening the impact. Even if the car was coming head on with the truck, I'm sure it would be knocked backwards due to the weight difference. Then they should smack two vehicles of the same size together.
I dunno, I'm just babbling here, but I don't think that's a real world test at all.
You definitely have a point there my good man! If real world applications are supposed to apply in a test like this why not smash to similar vehicles together at the same speed. That would be a 'real world' test. However seeing the F150 crumple like a bear can and seeing the Tundra cab stay put like a well training dog makes me think Ford is getting slacky!!! Like 78f250 states stay will older vehicles! They are actually made from hard steel and not all of this fancy weight saving plastic crap cars are made of today. The bad thing is for some reason trucks these days aren't made like a real truck. Kind of like a car with a pickup bed slapped on! Can we say that the 3 major truck makers of this nation don't really care what happens to you when you drive one of these vehicles! Sure can because Toyota figured out how to protect its clientele!
Oh by the way watch out for those concrete barriers! They bite pretty hard!! hehehehe!

I don't think it was the government doing this test. My understanding it was the Insurance Institute, these results will probably show up on your premiums.
