New to this forum...just bought a '82 F150 for $500. The body is solid, motor is strong so pretty good deal to have a beater to drive around in bad weather and haul with. Couple of questions if someone could help....
1. The PCV system has been reconfigured. I have the 302 v8, the driver's side valve cover has the PCV valve and the passenger side has the vent that usually is routed back up to the air cleaner cover to recirculate crankcase gases. Well the vent on the passenger side is routed under the truck with heater hose. Didn't think much of it until I realized the only oil smoke this truck puts off is out the PCV vent hose, nothing out the exhaust??? What would cause the excessive smoke out of the PCV vent? Engine runs strong and doesn't appear to have any internal problems.
2. Not sure what transmission my truck has, it's a 3 speed auto but reverse lights aren't working. Need to get a haynes manual but it the meantime where is the reverse light switch located on the transmission??
Thanks for any help....any common probs I should keep a eye out for with a '82??

If there is no filter on the end of the hose, it's been sucking in dirt and who knows what else. Pull the hose and at least route a new one back to the air cleaner. Or buy a vented cap with the filter inside and use that. If you are getting some smoke out of the vent\intake hose while the motor is running your PCV valve is not working, replace it. I would take the hose off the valve cover and see how much blow by I had, if it was alot with a new PCV then your rings maybe gone.
But before looking for trouble take care of the easy stuff first. Reroute hose, do a tuneup and oil change and then start an evaluation.
Makes sense - it's blowing smoke out of what I think should be the intake on the passenger side that would normaly route to the air cleaner and on the driver side where the PCV valve should be is another vent I think - haven't looked at it that close but appears to be a old style chrome, round filter that pushes into the valve cover.
The motor runs strong and seems tight so don't think the rings are bad but time will tell, eitherway a incorrectly configured PCV system will not help with blow by!!!
If I have to purchase a replacement motor would you recommend using another 302 or switch to the 300 I-6?
Getting a book on the truck tonight - Thanks again!
