hi all!!
got a problem with my diesel 85 6.9
it has a problem starting it fires right up and then about three seconds go by and the engine races a little and shuts down, it takes some cranking to get it back going again but once it starts it does fine after that but seems to be getting worse. this happened last year and I found a leak in the return line on above the valley pan in the back I fixed that and it done fine for about a year but it is back doing it again and this time I can't find a leak.
now the other day we took a trip to cincinnati and on the way back the truck just lost power I thought it was the transmission going out the way it felt but after driving for a while I realized the tranny was pulling fine but the engine was very loud and rough. we decided to limp home at a blazing 40 mph about 25 miles later it felt like I kicked in the nitrous (I don't have nitrous) truck took off ran fine the rest of the way home. still have the starting problem. could they be related? what could possibly cause this?
I am going to add propane directly but want to have the bugs worked out first.
Try to follow your fuel lines as best you can. I no leaks then maybe your lift pump is letting pressure back? I dunno when my lift pump went out my truck wouldn't hardly start (took 30 seconds of cranking). Or have you replaced your fuel filter lately? Fuel filter be the first thing I looked into (cheapest). But just a thought.
Acting like the fuel is running back while it sits - thus the start and stop. Are the return lines leaking? Then as you mentioned it got sluggish while going down the road, might point to the lift pump on the pass side of the block, near the front - like a gasser. I believe most parts stores have them. If you change it, make sure that you get the cam in the right spot.
I am totally lost on it I can't find a leak in the line I guess the next thing I need to do is pressure test them. someone said a sometime ago to me there was a check valve in the return system that keeps pressure on the back side of the injectors is this true and where would I find it to check it? what pressure should the lift pump put out?
