a couple weeks ago, I discovered I had a dana (instead of a sterling) axle under my f250.. 10 bolts, fill plug in the cover and the rear cover looks like a big model of the front 44.
now.. The only trouble is that I don't know if it is a 70 or 60. The cover doesn't completely cover the the center, so I am assuming it is a 70 (it is a FF rear on an 8600LB GWVR truck), and I think the 60s have the cover going the whole way to the edge of the diff.
the other thing is, how do you figure out where is it a 70U or a regular 70?? There is no "60" or "70" stamped on the axle, and I can't read the BOM either..
3" tubes or 3.5"? 70's have the larger tubes...also it "should have a "70" stamp somewhere in the webs on the top of the centersection, clean that sucker good. The "70u"s bottem are smooth as an egg, you can see mine in my gallery for reference.
Hmm, I checked your gallery for reference Pro, but all I could find was this picture. Maybe it's time you tell us what's going on down there in St. Helens. Come on . . . no need to be sheepish here, we're all your friends. You just look rather protective of your 4 legged companions.
Bremen, if it's the stock axle it should be a D60, not a 70. I may be wrong but I believe the 60's and 70's both used the same diff cover. As Pro said "baaaa" which should be read as "Dana 70's have BIG tubes". The model number should be in the webbing by your diff cover, not on the tubes.

that is the funniest pic i have ever seen in my life!!!!!!!
anyways, I'll have to measure the tube. I guess I could pull an axle too.. I cleaned the whole housing b4 I painted it, and I didn't see any numbers stamped on it, except for 10 or 15 numbers on the tube [BOM?], but you couldn't really read them, or I would have tried to decode them on the dana expert site..
btw, ivan- this truck is an '85, I think that the 80s trucks used both 60s & 70s.
The bottom in this one seems somewhat smoth, it has a big square notch out of the driver's side below the pinon...
remember D60 and D70 use the exact same covers and they look almost identical. the D60's have a 9 3/4-inch ring gear diameter and the D70 has a 10.54-inch ring gear diameter. if you get a chance measure it! it's a sure fire way to tell!

It's definitely not a U then. I believe (could be wrong) that the "U" only came in vans. In any event you don't even have to pull an axle, just measure the diameter of the tube. 3" is a 60, 3.5" is a 70. Seems odd that there aren't any numbers on that housing though.
Guess I'll just have to rely on news from the Iraqi front:
Hey, don't go giving me grief about that. I was simply looking for the 350 tons of missing weapons. 2 humps looked a bit suspicious . . . how was I to know they were born like that? Be all you can be!
my D44 doesn't have anything cast into the webbing either. on my build sheet it says 4500# front axle. i was told it was a D44HD. Whats the difference between D44 & D44HD? anyway i can truly tell. i think the 4500#axel is prety HD if you ask me but i dunno what a regular is verses and HD. can anyone tell me.
a dana 44 is pretty much an 8 lug dana 44 with bigger brakes, not to sure about the internals, pretty sure they are the same other than heavier bearings and such.
o wow, i almost fell outa my chair laughin, this is a pretty good thread. i guess id rather be around a couple sheep effers that know they have a problem than the ones who try and sneak up on you in the dark
