i went to get my inspection today and the mechanic told me i had a leaky exhaust manifold. but he said he didnt know where and couldnt explain to me what it sounded like. he said he wouldnt pass my truck because its winter time which didnt make sense to me. the truck is a 1996 and the guy said it could have a rotted out EGR tube or the gasket is bad... when i went home all i could hear was a ticking sound but not when idling. i checked all around the manifold and the EGR tube and no leaks. does anyone think that with 117,000 miles the valves could be ticking ..maybe lifters?????? if anyone can help it would be appreciated
An exhaust leak will make a ticking sound, kinda like a valve lifter but not quite. You can find the leak pretty easy if its in the manifold. Crank her up cold with a bottle of diluted soapy water and spritz the manifold. It will bubble up where the leak is. Most times its a gasket or sometimes a rusted through spot in the mani itself. Both are easy to change. Donut gaskets where the pipe meets the mani is another common failure, also easy to change if you have air tools.
Or, try another shop. My rule of thumb on smog/safety inspections is never go to a place where the mech is younger than your Ford. They just don't understand or give a rat's ****...it's like the old saying, never try to teach a pig to dance, it's a waste of your time and it just aggravates the pig. Find a shop where they appreciate your truck.
Your engine should have a long tube that runs the length of the head, just above the exhaust /intake manifold flanges????? This is the air injection tube(manifold) to the exhaust ports. The tube has 6 smaller tubes coming out of it and going to a Ferrell just above each exhaust port. These smaller tubes either rot out or came loose from the large tube (air injection manifold ) and will cause an exhaust leak that you can't hear except when the engine is running under a load, sounds like a ticking under acceleration when there is high pressure in the exhaust system. The air injection manifold is connected to a check valve (about half way along it's length) and the check valve is connected to the diverter valve via a molded rubber hose.
