We have a dinky little 5 gallon air compressor. It works perfectly for inflating tires, but one stuck bolt with the impact wrench and you have to wait another two minutes befure the diaphragm style pump can refill the tank. They have these $200 25 gallon compressors at Kragen: http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDeta...goryCode=3483A . I know it's probably not the best of quality, but we'd need to take out a second on the house to buy a nice Ingersol compressor. Any thoughts on this cheap one? We wouldn't use it that often so would it be worth it?
the link dosn't go to the compressor, but I think your talking about this one 830238 if you put that in the search. 3.2 cfm at 90 wont run any tools non stop, not even a blow gun. It will pobably last 2 or 3 lugnuts before it kicks in, and i'd guess like 2 minuets to top off. On the plus side, its oil lube, so you can run it hard and its not going to wear out nearly as fast as a oiless one.
I have a 60 gallon 3hp 9cfm and that barely shuts off when using a die grinder, but is fine for lug nuts and blow guns.
For as often as I use air tools I don't mind waiting a bit at times. If I used them everyday all day I would probably go with some HD compressor setup.
I got along for years with just a York AC compressor hooked up to a washing machine motor with no storage at all and a simple relief valve for a regulator. It was not efficient but it inflated tires, filled an air bubble tank, and would blow off a part if required. The lack of storage was a blessing in that it only had to pressurize the hose to be ready to air up a tire. I could not run any air tools tho. I still have the pump setup and use it to pull a vacuum and other tasks.
I have a couple of 1HP pool pump motors...I've been wanting to build my own compressor. I need a pump and a tank though. I could come up with a tank, but I need to find the pump, and those are hard to find alone.
Just for the heck of it I looked. Its 11 gallon and 9 cfm @ 90, but for 200$ thats fairly impressive. It wont last long but would be useful considering the cost. Run synthetic oil in it.
hey maticuno, The 1hp pool pump is NOTHING compared to a real compressor motor. I work at a electric motor rebuild place, and in the summer all we do is pool pumps. I'v done alot of compressor motors too, and the pool pump motor has much less starting torque because of its smaller rotor. I'd save the motor and make another pump to do some power vac's. next summer i'm gonna do alot more vac's too.
I was lookin at this compressor at Princess auto. It's 120 Gallon, Horiziontal Job, with an 11 hp motor, that requires a starter. Big machine, goes up to 175 psi. Try running an impact wrench. Probably break the studs.
Just bought a Husky 7HP 80 gallon 240V Compressor. It handles 15.1 CFM @ 90 PSI and 13.7CFM @ 175PSI. It says its a 175 PSI max but doesn't shut off until 185 PSI. It will run an impact with NO problem. Painted my sons car with primer and it it only kicked on 3 times. Its a great compressor. Home Depot had it for $799.00.
my friend has had the grizzly compressor since it came out in 2002 and it is used daily in a small machine shop and runs about 7 hrs a day and it has been great paid for itself the first week he has since bought 2 more to power air powered machine accesories
In the past I had painted about 15 cars using a 20 gal Speedaire, but recently at a neighbors garage sale I picked up a Husky 26 gal, 5hp upright that was only a few mo old for $200, and he threw in a 25' hose on a recoil reel. I checked Home Depot, $475. Yeaaaah....
See...I really can't afford anything over $250 total. That's why the cheapy Kragen compressor looks appealing. It would only be used for tire inflation and the rare impact.
I dunno.. Rare impact? If you think "rare impact", you're crazy. Once that beast gets hammerin' and spinnin', all you want to do is run it. Try spending a few dollars more. Like the old Fram commercial said "Pay a little more now, or a lot more later"
How about this....a 7hp, 60 gal. compressor from Snap-on for $749...Canadian dollars!!
It runs anything, including my twin post in-ground hoist. I figure it was a darn good deal.
The dollar is so high, 749 works out to be about 600 US, or 500. Still out of his range. Look in the newspaper. I saw a 100 gallon 9 hp goin for 500 canadian
