Multiple problems here. '86 conversion van, 302/aod.
I think I got one of them fixed today though. Timing was off (advanced) by 10 degrees.
When I towed with it, it was pinging going uphill, then the motor would just shut off. I could get it to restart, but it would take about 3-4 minutes.
Yesterday, during a short in town trip, it died on me 5 times within 2 miles. And was very difficult to get started each time. One time I wasn't even able to get it into gear before it died again.
Today, after I retimed it, I let it warm up, then drove it around the neighborhood with no problems (a little doggish now). BUT, I stopped at my mom's house for a few, and when I went to leave, it was really hard to get started again. At least it stayed running this time.
So, I have no idea on what could be causing it to die, or why it's hard starting anymore. I figured that it would start easier since the timing was now set (10 degrees), but once it gets warm - forget it.
I need to get this figured out quick. This is our wheelchair van, and we have a lot of doc appt's this coming week.
Ok, it sounds like it's still way out of time. You need to remove the spout connector, then check the timing with either a light, or a magnetic probe type analyzer. It should be set at 10 DBTDC. You may be able to go 12 without it pinging... The timing chain may have slipped.... If the spout was still hooked up (look for a black or grey jumper in a wire coming from the ICM on the distributor.) it would read about 20 degrees at idle...
OK, I didn't disconnect anything from it.
It was at 20d, before I adjusted it. But it was pinging like crazy, with any form of a load. Even from a stop, if you stepped on it, it would ping.
I got the van a couple of months ago, and haven't been able to give it a tune-up.
I have the time now, since I just had surgery on my shoulder. It will be a little bit before I'm using my left arm, without it killing me.
I took the van out tonight, and drove it around again, now it's running hot.
I'm used to working on a carburated, non computerized FE.
I need to learn how to check the codes on this as well.
The codes are easy, I'll look up the article.... Get a haynes manual (about 15 bux) it also has the procedure for pulling codes... Running hot indicated a retarded condition.
<A href=https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-112295>Here</a> is the article..
Thanks.
I was kinda figuring on the retarded issue, since the timing was the only thing that I messed with today.
Too dark out to do anything else to it tonight.
I'll have to mess with it tomorrow.
Well, it did it again. Died that is.
On my way to phys therapy this morning, just died.
It started back up, but... it died again within 30 seconds.
As soon as it gets warm, that's when it happens. After the t-stat opens.
I'll be picking up a code scanner tonight or tomorrow.
That sounds like the ignition control module..... It's on the bottom of the dizzy.... Don't get the autozone brand... Get it from napa or the dealer..... It's expensive so check your blood pressure before you go.....
I did pick up a code scanner tonight, I'll run codes in the morning.
It did the same thing on the way home tonight, when I went to pick it up.
Took a friend, I ended up having him tow me about half way home.
These things are no fun to steer with the engine off, and one arm in a sling, going around corners.
Yeah, I know how that is......... I still stand by the ICM being bad. We have had bad ignition parts right out of the box. CQ sells two different lines (or at least used to) of ignition parts, one is cheap the other is not.. We always went for the expensive stuff, it's always cheaper to buy the good ones the first time, than buy the cheap ones and have to be towed home....
Mine was doing the same thing and ended up being the pickup coil. Most of the time it is the module, but that's not how my luck goes! Yep, been on the back of a rope before only it was my Ford pulling my brothers C***y and he didn't have the coconuts to be the pulley! lol!
I ran through the tests with the engine off, I got a code 31, 10, 11.
Fine, so I start the van to do the timing test. Base timing is at 12d. Turn the tester on, let it run through the codes. Wait for timing to change...it does, it retards 10d instead of advancing 20d.
I replaced the ICM. Still the same thing. It won't stay running. It doesn't even get all the way warmed up and it dies. Which is what it was doing before I replaced the ICM this morning.
I can get it to restart with a couple of tries, sometimes as soon as I hit the key, which is better than what it was before.
It will run for about one minute, that's it.
It dies whether it's at an idle, or if I step and the gas and bring up the rpm's.
