Haven't actually raced them, but the company I used to work for had a Ranger with the 3.0, and a couple with the 4.0. If both vehicles are stock and in normal operating condition, the 4.0 would absolutely blow the 3.0 away.
well to give you a little idea, My 02 4.0L 4X4 and my buddies 00 4.3 Chev extreme are an absolute dead match, its all in the holeshot with these two trucks, and my co worker has an 01 3.0 ranger and it doesn't stand a chance, I do have to admit, the low end is there on the 3.0, meaning it picks right up and goes, but the 4.0 starts to walk on it pretty quick
I have a 1998 ranger 2.5L regular cab 4X2 5speed and I raced my friends 2002 ranger 4.0L extended cab 4X4 auto twice. Once with the 4X4 on and once without. I beat him both times. With the 4X4 on he took me off the line but I got him in second gear. When we raced without the 4X4 on I killed him because he ended up spinning his tires. I also raced my friends 2.3L S-10 extended cab 4X2 auto. This was no contest, I beat him by a good three cars.
I have a slightly modified 4.0 ranger and I pulled away very good on another 3.0 ranger that had atleast a good exhaust system. Though I probly have more modifications than he does. but I garantee stock to stock the 4.0 would win until the 4.0s speed governer kicked in.They have as far as i know the lowest governers out there.

Well Im gonna have to throw up the bs flag on that one.
there is no way a 4 banger is gonna take a 4.0 if the driver isnt drunk or sleeping. I drove all 3 models including the 2.3 that has more hp than the 2.5 and there is just no way if the same person was driving both that the 4 banger will win.
now maybe 0-35mph or something a shortbed reg cab 4 banger might take a 4x4 auto extended cab 4.0.
simply because of a clutch dump and much less weight. But if you are racing more than a couple hundred feet its not gonna happen.
Disclaimer: Im not saying you are lying.. but in real world this SHOULDNT happen unless the one 4.0 driver stalls it or misses gears etc.
I have a 3.0L and the best thing to due when racing a 4.0L is power brake till you are about to spin tires and take OD off. I can hand with a 4.0 alot longer then if i just punch it from the line with OD on. also having 4.10's kinda help
well i have kept right up with a dodge intrepid 3.5 liter v-6 with i think a cold air intake although we didnt really line up i just happened to be behind a friend. if we had lined up and i launched nice and hard i prolly could have hung out in front for some time. i have the 4.0/ 5speed in a 4x4 extended cab. i could eat my friends 3.0/ 5speed reg. cab, long bed, 2wd tho. i also kept up with a buick going up a hill. to tell ya the truth the buick surprised me quit a bit but in the long run i prolly could have beat him.
