Could someone lease tell me what size socket fits the harmonic balancer bolt. The big one in the middle. I need to roll the motor over by hand to ensure its not stuck. Its been sitting since April with a open head. No water has gotten but it has been quite humid. This is on a 1996 4.9/300 6 cyl. In your opinion what are my chances that the motor has not seized? It had a cracked head and took a while to find one that would work that was not cracked. Or if someone has a suggestion on how to roll this motor over to check for seizing other than by hand.
Thanks in advance.
I JUST went through this on my S-10. It sat for 2 years with the head off, no water but the motor siezed from moisture. Squirt a little trans fluid in each cylinder all the way around the piston and let it sit for a couple days. Worked great for me, put it all back together a couple weeks ago and it runs great with no loss of compression. Not sure about the bolt size, probably 15/16 or 1".
I can't help ya with the bolt size, but i'd be pretty confident it's not siezed. Stacey David from Trucks TV took a 40s or 50s truck that's been sitting in the back of a field for god knows how long and got it running so I think you should be able to if he can. That was a funny episode i must add.
Seems to me 15/16 is correct You could pull the fuel pump relay and use the starter.
No relay no fuel, and your not going to crank it very long, im sure.
Thanks for the information on the bolt size. Now I have another question. Worst case sernario,If the motor is seized from setting so long. I have heard that I can put transmission fluid in and it will free it up. Which should I do, pour the transmission fluid into the oil via the valve cover and let it run down OR squirt some into the spark plug holes with an injector of some sort to let it run down and around the piston walls only. Or is there something else I might want to use? Will try turning the engine over by hand in a about an hour and will post back with the results. I just want to have all the bases covered BEFORE I need something and don't have it( I am going to the store to get the socket and would like to get everything at once). Its a long drive to the parts store when driving a vehicle that has a bad transmission, Thats another story but its a dodge and not a ford, and next on the repair list.
Good news. The motor was not seized. Turned it over by hand 2 full turns and now turns over with the starter. No funny sounds or flying parts. Now just gotta figure out where this silly ground strap goes..(see post.. where oh where).
