I replaced a bunch of electrical parts on my truck including solenoid, alternator, and plugs. The only problem I;m having is the truck will not start now, nothing happens at all. I think I may have wired my solenoid wrong. I read somewhere that on the left hand terminal, another wire needs to hook to that side, along with the battery cable....can anyone verify this before I do it and short something out.
Yeah, you need one on the post that the battery is connected to that goes to the fuse block and from there to the ignition switch. It should have an in line fuse link on it near the solenoid switch end. It's the main power supply wire to the ignition switch.
Still won't start? Check the wires on the "S" and "I" posts on the solenoid switch. With the key switch turned to the run position the "I" post should light up a test light and so should the coil's (+) post. If you have wires connected to both small posts of the solenoid switch and the coil (+) ain't hot, switch the wires around and try the test light again. The other wire goes to the ignition and neutral safety switch circuit and should only be hot with the key switch in the crank position. Hope this helps.
He said it's turning over now, so he must have the small wires on the solenoid correct. The power on the coil + terminal is a good place to start though.
I did check the S and I terminals it only works on the one. i have not yet checked the coil. My dad told me just to take it somewhere to have it fixed. I hate to do it, but I don't have the tools I really need to do the work on it. Plus I got classes and I gotta study and work and all that good stuff. I hate to do it, cuz I prefer doing my own work. But I don't think I have much other choice. Thanks a lot for the help tho guys.
Hey! Don't give in yet. Franklin2 just chimed in and he's got the most electrical savy on this board IMHO, and a vast library of schematics that he can post to get you through it a lot easier than reading my scatterbrained typing.
One more odd thing noticed tonight. It still won't start, haven't checked the coil yet, I actually thought about that earlier, but didn't check it. The strange thing is though, the truck turns over, no start. Everything works on it except my CD player (CB works), my headlights/taillights/turn sigs, and brake lights. I checked all fuses, none are blown. i just think its strange that random stuff won't work. My fan, CB, wipers, washer, eveything but the above mentioned works fine...cept for the engine still of course....and now I can't sleep, I see batteries, solenoids and wires running through my head, haha

There is a fuse link in the power supply wire to your main light switch that would affect the head and tail/marker lights. And there is also a multifunction switch that controls function of turn signals, hazzard flashers and brake lights. Check to see if you have power supply to the main light switch first. The other may or may not be dependent on that. I haven't got access to diagrams to your specific truck to muse over yet. Get the engine running first 'cause you ain't gonna need light if you can't motivate! By the way, what are the specifics of your truck? Is it the same as your sig? Engine displacement?
Time to see if the (+) post is hot with the ignition switch in the run position. If it is check for current from the coil to the distributor while cranking the engine.
