temporary diesel fuel container?

Does anyone know of a common household container that I can put diesel fuel into for temporary storage, like a day or two? I need to drain my tank and then hopefully put the fuel back in later. Something like a empty gallon plastic milk container(s)? I had a bad experience with gas in a styrofoam cup as a kid (found out the real meaning of disolve something there!). I really don't want to invest in a metal "approved" container for this one time temporary use.

5 gallon gas cans are like 6 bucks at wal mart and probably your safest place to store fuel. A plastic milk jug I would think would be ok or if you have gallon oil jugs from oil changes that will work also.

Your best bet is to invest a few dollars in a plastic gas can as other plastics can dissolve in diesel. I also read that zinc lined cans are bad for diesel.

How much fuel??

An inexpensive fuel container would be your best bet, and 'always' handy for any other liquids around the house if needed.. But, if you need a reasonably safe throw away, and cheap too, theres always the paint store 5 gallon sealable paint buckkets with screw lids.. CLEAN of course.. Most sell them cheap or some even give them away..

You could syphon your diesel into your buddy's empty truck (gas tank) and have him buy you a 12 pack in exchange.

Thanks for all the replies.

I will need to drain my tank so I can drop it down and mess with the float calibration. With the cost of diesel these days, I just didn't want to waste any!

I didn't consider siphon to a friends tank. This may work out, as long as he lets me siphon it back.... Ideally, I would want to put it back a little at a time to get the float calibrated better at the empty side. I plan on bending the rod the float is connected to just like in a toilet tank, to allow me to read down at the empty end more then the full end. Currently when the gauge reads below empty, I still have 8 gallons in there (this is with a larger aftermarket transfer fllow 46 gallon tank). Kind of negates the advantage of a larger tank if you can't really tell how much is really in there

Bend it up high enough and you never run out of fuel!!! Think of all the money you'd save

You may want to invest in a drill powered oil change pump available at any boat store and a lot of Wal Mart's. You'll find it invaluable for transfering the fuel back and forth. I recently pulled my tank and found the pump is quick and easy to use.
