Motor was replaced about 4 years ago. I can hear/feel it running. The window seems to be barely staying in the up position and needs manual assistance if it is accidentally rolled down. am I safe to assume that the gear set is the problem? If so, how hard is it to replace? I see that they cost about 30 at autozone. Don't want any problems before winter sets in!!
I have the same problem with the passenger side. I will roll up if someone applies pressure, but otherwise it just vibrates and doesn't go anywhere. I am currently at school, and don't have the time, place, or tools to access the situation, but my dad suggested that one of the welds on the window support bracket broke. This would cause on side to be pushed up, but not the other. This would create a jamming effect which explains why the window travels with manual help.
P.S. my window goes down automatically, but needs help going up.
anyone else have this problem/ cheap ideas how to fix it?
Sounds like a problem with the round plastic bumpers that are in the gear set. I just replaced mine with the 25.00 Autozone parts and it works great now. Would not go up without assistance. It seems odd that your motor/gearset would be bad after only four years, however if it has been replaced once it should be easy to fix the second time since the holes are most likely already drilled out in the door skin to gain access to the motor mounting screws. Check out https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=111640 for instructions.
The gear set is seperate from the motor yes? I have only ventured into the interior of the door once and that was to change the dead motor. And yes, the door is already drilled out for the bolt holes.
The motor can be taken apart to replace the gear set, it is inside the motor housing and is replaceable. Check out the link in my last post, you will even find photo's.
go on ebay and buy the $5 bushings they sell. i did to fix the same problem you are having. you will want to pull out the whole window unit from the door. it would be way to hard to replace this part still inside. also know that there wont be anything to hold the window in place. I used a bungie , hooked it under the window and ran it thru the wing window and hooked other end to mirror. worked great and kept window from falling into door.
OK, it was the gearset that was bad. Even took the time to fix all of the broken panel fasteners so now, no rattling. Very satisfying bronco day.
Thanks for all the help/advice all.
you can also drill and tap the spots where the studs were and put 1/4-20 set screws in and remember to loctite the threads this works great i did both of mine on my last 88 the only cost is the set screws unless you have set screws at work
