Hello, just bought my first Ford truck. 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4 ext cab, 3.0ltr v6 I believe. I like it a lot, and am looking for recommendations for lubricants (engine oil, tranny fluid (automatic), and a good polish for the paint so I can keep it looking good.
I haven't been able to find any recommendations of type of oil. Dad always ran Penzoil in his old 79 Ford, but that was a V8, and I didn't know if other brands were better?
Man you have no idea what a can of worms (or should I say barrel-o'-monkeys?) you've opened up.
Best bet - depending on your budget, make sure you get an "SL" rated motor oil (brand is EXTREMELY argueable - if you want to be "pure", stick with one brand and if you want to be a "pure-IST" use Motorcraft only. *** WARNING *** on your transmission - use "MERCON V" ONLY! Not "mercon", and absolutely not any dexron or other TYPE of trans fluid. Remember the "V" (or is it 5?) after the Mercon - VERY IMPORTANT not to mix these!
And for the price (relatively and generally speaking) you can't beat a Motorcraft filter - you could pay more, and get less - and this would help keep you, if you so desire or are so inclined, in the "purist" loop\category!
Pjyoyoman....I agree with you...Pennzoil is a good way to go. My father also recommended that to me growing up. He is a master mechanic of over 25 years, and he absolutely WILL NOT use anything except Pennzoil. He also will not touch Fram filters...says they are well marketed, but poorly made. Personally, if I can't have Pennzoil, then I stick with Motorcraft original equipment fluids/filters.
Heard an interesting thing on the radio last week. The Synthetic Blends are allowed to be anywhere from 50% to 5% synthetic and still advertise themselves as a Synthetic Blend. If I'm gonna fork over the big bucks for Synthetic Oil, I want 100%.

You may want to post this in the 'lubrication' section, that is all we discuss. Any of the name brand 'SL', GF3 oils should be fine. I always liked Castrol but its gotten too expensive of late. Havoline and Mobil Drive Clean, as well a Chevron or Shell look like good performers for less cash.
Man, -I can't even go out for an evening without you guys messing up the sandbox... :-X23
Oil lubricants etc go in their own forum. Wax polish etc goes in the appearance forum.
_Geeeeez Keep it organized guys! We have a bunch of forums here to keep related info together and so people don't have to sift thru a whole bunch of posts to find the one they want to answer.
p.s. I wouldn't give you a nickel for a quart of Penzoil -hehe
Thanks for using FTE!
