Robbed!

K, now that I have your "undivided attention"....
There has been a string of armed robberies in and around my city, two masked men with guns breaking into homes and robbing them. They dont care if you are there or not or whether or not you have a security system. They have mostly been going through open windows, and well since my bedroom window doesnt lock (shhhh! you dont know that) and it faces the front then I sleep with a bat next to me right now. But I was wonderin , do you all have a plan set up for different scenarios on what you would do? ie: If they came in the front door I do _____ and if they came in the side window I do _______
My plan is basically along the lines of, if they come in my window, I start swinging, If they come in the door or another window, I start swinging.
^^MASTER plan!! Oh and I do have copywrites on that plan also

Also, have any of you all been robbed while at home? Did you have to protect your family when you did? What happened??

if someone enters my home......i just introduce them to MR.Charles Daily...and his sidekick Scatterbrains....they don't like to argue...they tend to be very short with their conversation's......

plus i have a couple of dogs as a early warning system.

So either way your just a swinging? I have never really thought about it. I have had small things stolen from my home, but most of the time it was visitors that I invited then caught.

I have been involved with a robbery though. I was in the grocery store shopping late at night (2 a.m.) when a armed robbery happened. Luckily at that time I didn't believe in carrying cash (only checks & credit) so they didn't get much out of me.

With all due respect, it's time for you to get real. You're taking a baseball bat to a gun fight?! Bad idea.

Well right now I have a loaded, not cocked yet so they can hear the sound and I wont waste a shell, 500C 20 gauge next to my bed between my desk and my bed. On my computer tower which is also between my bed and my desk is an M88 .38 Special loaded with sub-sonic HP so it wont exit the target and exit the house and injure an innocent. Than next to my bed on the other side is a loaded but also not cocked M2213 .22 semi-automatic pistol loaded with LRC. Than in various places about the house there are several other weapons as follows. In one of the other bedrooms is a Montana Marshal .22 revolver loaded with LRC. Than out in the living room closet there are a M80 .22 bolt action rifle loaded with LRC and a Glenfield Mod 30 30-30 loaded with FMJ. Basically my plan is to shoot first, shoot some more and than when everybody is dead try and ask a question or two. However I do plan to clearly identify myself and announce that I have a loaded weapon and request that they identify themselves.

Signed,
The Don

Although residential burglary/home invasion does not happen in my area, I do have a rather simple plan. Introduce the criminal to one of Mr. Gaston Glock's fine products, model #22 . Shoot first, ask questions later. Fire in groups of two shots until the threat is halted . Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to the cops until my attorney is present; politely inform the cops of this. I also concur with the post about your bat VS their guns. I would also suggest you secure your window(s) and, if not already done, install deadbolts and, if needed, good doors. In the end, remember that there is probably nothing in your house that is worth dying over.

There is a facility in my area that treats troubled/defective youth. Awhile back, the fire department forced them to make changes resulting in "residents" escaping. The cops don't go looking for the kids as they claim this is "not our job". Geeeee, I wonder if there is any connection between the 69% increase in the year 2004 of items being stolen from garages and the cars in them in my area?????? It's so PC of the media to inform the public of the garage problem, but it's cute of them not to talk about the source. It's quite blatent what's going on; before the security changes virtually no problems, after changes big problem.

If they get past my 2- 185# Mastiffs, I'm shootin the dogs first, then the Unenvited guest. But my gut tells me that I'll be makin a decision on what to do with the bodies of the bad guys.. Seems like cheep dog food to me.. Heck Meat is Meat.

Come on.. You gota protect your family and property.. and if you don't, these guys will do the same to our Mom's and Daughters or worst... You break into a bad guys house, and he's -A- shootin ya.. everytime.

I would keep shooting until someone screams or I hear a big thud from them hitting the floor.

Security system, good deadbolts, some fine products from Mr. Glock and Mr. Mossberg, and good, well-armed next-door neighbors keep the bad guys at bay here. (GA and SC laws also work in favor of homeowners shooting home invaders whether or not they are armed, as long as they entered forcibly.)

Everyone here has so far assumed rapid and easy access to your firearm/weapon of choice. Odds are against that unless you carry all the time. Not too convenient with a bat, a shotgun, rifle, etc. I am not saying they aren't a viable defense, just not practical to depend upon. One should be aware of their surroundings, and try to visualize what items near them could be used for personal defense.

The idea of having firearms planted throughout the house is also a boo hiss idea. You are potentially arming the intruder should they locate the weapons before you remove the threat.

Without getting long-winded, I will simply recommend everyone take the NRA's basic course on personal protection. It is not simply a training aid for smoking an intruder, it covers marksmanship, legal ramifications of using deadly force, etc. I took this course about a year ago, it was very enlightening! Makes you really think. The use of deadly force should be the last option. Not to say never, but the courts will look much more favorably on YOU if you did not simply go blazing away like an urban Rambo.

Remember this should you ever use deadly force. You will more than likely be taken into custody, possibly charged as well, depending upon your local and state laws. Be prepared to defend your actions. As someone mentioned above, do not talk to the police without a lawyer. And PLEASE, do not start bragging on how you bagged the bad guy, to ANYONE. You could be held both legally responsible as well as in civil action!

Well, all that court stuff doesent really mean a whole lot to you when your in a situation of having to defend your home and family. Consequences aside you really dont have a choice. The idea of taking a law abiding husband/father/homeowner into custody or prosecuting him is insane IMO. Lets picture this for a moment. One or more men have had the nerve to enter your home armed with weapons, and with intent to steal your property. These arent nice guys. Who can say it will end with theft? Is your wife pretty? Your daughter? Perhaps they started with one intention and just happen to figure they may as well go for the gold. Nothing to make a husband feel more useless than to be held at gunpoint while his wife is raped. Some criminals get off on making the woman know how vulnerable she is because her husband can do nothing to stop them. In some rare instances the husband may even be raped in front of his wife. Lots of sick twisted people out there. The majority of simple thefts/robberies may never go to this extreme, but I for one have no intention of trusting in the moral convictions of someone who has no problem with the moral implication of breaking into my house in the first place. Then theres even the possibility of murder. Dead people don't talk or provide descriptions. If an assailant is someone you even remotely know, the chance of murder is alot more likely, and since they probably intend to kill you and yours anyway, rape is also far more likely as well.

In the end no one will really care - except relatives of course. You will be mentioned in the local paper or local TV and a week later no one will remember - if they've even heard. The police will take notes and investgate. Could be years before your case is resolved - especially if your case was one of random robbery/rape/murder. The state will list you in their crime victim statistics for the year, and political pundits from both sides with use these to make cases for their opposing agendas. Life will go on.

Extreme violence is necessary with some people. Use of deadly force in your own home is an absolute must if you are serious about defending your family and not becoming a statistic. You must be absolutely prepared to kill someone if necessary.

A plan goes a long way toward preserving your security in a situation like this. No plan is absolutely fool proof. Alarms fail, dogs can get sick, or die silently, you may sleep through commotions because of being extremely tired, etc. I dont think an openly visible firearm is a good idea, it can be used against you(or at the very least - be removed from your reach) while you are sleeping if they get that kind of jump on you.
I also agree that placing loaded firearms around the home is just plain ineffective at best, and extremely detrimental to your security in reality.

An alarm system would be a very good first line of defense. A good dog is line number two. Learn to read your dog's expressions and emotions. They can tell you alot. Dogs can sense presences long before we can. They will smell an intruder long before you see him. If your looking in one direction and your dog turns his head in an opposite direction for no apparent reason, chances are he's heard something you cant. Dogs can even wake you themselves in a case of intrusion. A cell phone with 911 programed into it should go without saying. A good solid .357 double action revolver
is hard to beat for simplicity, accuracy, and above all - reliability. If you are alerted to an intrusion while there is still time to secure your position, then retrieving the shotgun from your bedroom closet is a good idea. If your alarm system has failed and your dog is dead, and your jumped while sleeping, your in trouble. However there is still one last chance. Since your awake now - they obviously havent killed you in your sleep. That dosent mean they wont later, or while raping your wife. That .357 is under the comforter with you. Its clipped to a swivel bushing stitched to the side of your mattress. A slight pull is all thats needed to remove it.

It really stinks how some people in this world can go their whole lives with no conscience. They will hurt their fellow man like he is nothing more than a game animal.
In all reality in a well planned robbery/attack, the odds are against you. Especially when assaulted by more than one experienced perpetrator late at night while sleeping, but IMO acknowledging this puts you back in the game. Never underestimate any perps
be smart(911), be prepared to use absolute deadly force, and never give up. All this will give you a decent chance.

If you can't keep them out, at least fortify so they have to make a lot of noise breaking in. That gives you time to react. Put a broomstick in that window. Not breakin proof, but that breaking glass will give you some warning. Deadbolts on doors takes at least a couple of seconds to get through.

All you need is time to react. Look around, there are easy things you can do. Our dog is not a mankiller, but she's alert and noisy.

My .45 M1911 is readily at hand, loaded with plain old lead ball ammo. I don't want to shoot through someone, I want their body to absorb all that energy. The 12 gauge with 00 buckshot magnum shells is very messy point blank, but it gets the job done.

If it's them or me, I'm gonna do whatever it takes to make sure it's them. If you have to break something to enter my house, you have nothing but evil on your mind.

I agree with 100% AxisAllies, especially with the dog. Many criminals, especially if they live locally, will not even bother with your house if you have a 100+ pound dog living with you. Even a small 30 pound dog will cause enough ruckus to let you wake up and clear your head.

Personally, I don't think that I would be able to kill someone if they broke into my house. Would you? If not, why do you have a gun? They are just gonna take it from you, and kill you and your family if you arent willing to kill them.

I practice prevention. I have a burglar alarm, with contacts on all doors, and windows. I also have motion sensors inside my house. I have flood lights out side that turn on if someone comes near the back door to my garage. I always keep the bushes trimmed, and I know my neighbors. I watch out for my neighbors, and they watch out for me. I lock all windows if they are accesible from the ground floor, and only leave ones open during the summer that aren't accesible. I also keep the garage locked all the time, and don't leave ladders out so people can climb into my window. I also try not to make myself a target by leaving the garage door open. I think that it is all about the prevention, IMHO
