Everyone here has so far assumed rapid and easy access to your firearm/weapon of choice
You are right on that point It will take a few minutes to unlock the case my handguns are in and it will stay that way after all I do have two kids. So I guess it will be up to the wife to beat them with the steel bar by the door until I get the guns unlocked.
I would love to be able to have a gun out at all times but the way my kid loves guns I just can't do it.
We also have a six cell mag light on the desk to beat someone with also.

By the way in my state (IN) we have to be in eminent and immediate danger.

As a female on a college campus, I am not as worried about burglars than I am about rapists... that's why I keep a claw hammer next to my bed...

I would think there is a bigger chance of that while you are out on the town. You might look into some mace or pepper spray that hooks to your key chain.

It's hard to say what I would do, I have never been robbed or burgularized. Lots of people say they will do this or that, but when you are sleeping and wake up in the middle of the night, you are startled, groggy, your senses may not be up to par, it's dark, you can't tell if there is 1 guy or 2, all these things come in to play and your emotions may take control of you.
That's why I don't think it's fair for a law abiding person to be persecuted if he injures or even kills an intruder. The intruder has no business being there and no one can read the mind of an intruder, so why take chances. My Dad used to say "Locks only keep honest people out".

you should look into a little device called screamer...its smaller than a pack of cigs, you pull the pin, it screaches at about 120 decimals a very high ear preicing noise, you can hear it 3 blocks away. the pin is not easily replaced, very effective it will get the attention you need for help ,when the word no does not work.....

I respect that. It's not easy to kill another human being. In fact, in a civilized society, it should be unthinkable.

But these aren't rational human beings we're talking about. These are criminals who are willing to break into a house while the occupants are certain to be at home. They aren't there to have coffee and a chat. I'd have no problem killing individuals like that. And a dead man can't testify against me.

If they steal my stuff while I'm gone, that is certainly not something I'd consider shooting someone for. I don't think personal property is justification for killing. Fear for life and limb is, and if I'm home when they break in, I have to assume they are there to harm us. Otherwise, they'd break in when we're not home.

The police can't arrive fast enough to do anything except find our dead bodies if we didn't protect ourselves.

First off I would secure the window. then I would get rid of the bat it will only get you hurt!!!! I don't reccomened you buying a firearm unless you plan on taking some kind of training on how to use it. more people are hurt with there own guns then are saved by them. stun guns and pepper spray work good. put up some extra outdoor lighting that always helps.

If some comes into my house they will leave me with know choice but to shoot. the safety of myself and my family comes first. I carry a handgun with me at all times. I sleep with one next to my bed. I also know how to use my firearms when to when not to shoot and what to say and when to say it... just remember that "you where in fear for your life"..

let just hope that none of us is ever put in a place where we have to defend our selfs!!!!!

I keep a quick access safe close, loaded and ready to Glock. I would not have any problems protecting my family, no material possesion is worth killing for but the principle of some scum bag breaking and entering your home makes him a threat to my family's well being. Better to be jugded by 12 than carried by 6.

Some of you posted about useing a bar or flashlight to hold him off till you can get a gun, stats show that is how the homeowner get hurt. Hit hard and fast and don't stop until the threat is gone. You may just **** the robber off and he will get up and attack you for revenge instead of running away.(unless he is dead)

Yes. Depending where you live, there are extremely liberal judges on the bench that feel that criminals like burglars are just out making a living just like you and I and they deserve to practice their trade without interference. So liberal that it's your fault for having so many possessions when there's others who were cheated out of having your possessions. These dangerous [IMHO] judges are the ones who would set a career burglar free, and jail a working stiff for defending his/her property.

Thank $DEITY that there's not many of these types of judges in Indiana. A delivery driver for Pizza Hut this past summer got held up and the driver made sure this goon didn't stick up any more pizza delivery drivers. Permanently. He was terminated from Pizza Hut for carrying in violation of company rules. That doesn't bother me - it's Pizza Hut's right to set whatever rules they like - and my right to never order take out from them The Marion Co. prosecutor declared this to be self-defence and did not prosecute. He's getting my vote next time around ...

The advantages over an armed stranger breaking in on you while you are there is that you know the layout of the building you are in and burgular dude doesn't. Use that info to your advantage. If you are armed also, you have another advantage over the intruder. He ain't expecting that. AeroPA said it, "these aren't rational human beings" so I don't know why some individuals feel like we should give an armed intruder the benifit of a doubt. Armed guy's intentions are obvious, why should our's be questionable? I may not have my firearm with me at all times cocked and locked, but I can guarantee I can get to it before strange intruders can and I know as soon as I hear someone bashing in, day or night, that is where I'm headed. If you feel you can't justify protecting yourself from such an intrusion, talk to someone that has experienced it before for an education. If you are affraid that the law will try to prosecute you for fear of lacking evidence that you were actually in "fear for your life", empty every round into the culprit and be there snapping the empty firearm toward the intruder frantically when the cops arrive! If that ain't fear, what is? I guess there could be law enforcement agencies out there that could conceive that two center mass and one cranial vault shots in an armed intruder with you greeting them with 14 rounds left over in the magazine doesn't constitute "fear for life" or justify taking him out. I hope not, but you never know!

I have a steel door, and a couple deadbolts. If they manage to wake me up, they get a taste of an 11-87 12 gauge.

Its loaded with turkey loads at the moment, #4 shot. I'm not too worried about shooting a second time... unless there are two intruders...

nothing in your house worth dying over? criminals don't know that. if they see a nice vehicle outside, they assume u r rollin' in the dough. in my state u shoot first, drag them INSIDE, then ask questions. i pitty the MORON who steps into my house un- announced. 22 semi- 4-ten-38 police special... etc...etc...

As a victim of crime personally. I will state that no one has the right to tell anyone whether or not he should take all precautions and arm themselves or not. When it comes down to it you and your family are all that matters in this world. Courts, Police, judge and jurors are just maybe a product of a definite solution. I incourage everyone to arm the hell out of their house and to take any action you can to protect yourslef and your family in your own home. Just make certain guns are not in the reach of little ones. I will also state that when I was young I was taught you never touch a gun until you are properly trained, to that I never did. Perhaps, if I took a non defensive role I could have seen my mother raped as a child- mr browning ended that form happenning. Role over and submit and you will surely be a victim.

absolutely 100% right on the money!! who knows what is on the criminal mind? if i don't protect my 15 & 13 yr. old who will? if they dialed 911 how long would it be b4 i could expect a response? the papers are full of stories that end with " if only i had, i wish i had,if they had only..." i personelly will not start a sentence with any of those. i will set in prison for the required amount of time & visit with my daughters occasionally instead of crying in the night, alone, wondering...what if!!
