When I turn my steering when counter clock wise at very slow speeds it makes a squaking moaning sound.
My power steering (i think it is power steering) is constantly making a sound like it is working hard, I can also feel a slight vibration in my brake pedal as this occurs. It almost sounds and feels like the power steering does when you are cranking the wheel all the way while at a dead stop. While sitting still I can hear the sounds of the power steering, if I turn my steering wheel slightly clockwise and hold it there the sound goes away, if I move it back like it was the sound and vibration in the brake pedal comes back.
Obviously I need to take it in to the dealer but I would like to do so with as much knowledge as possible.
It may be doing it while I drive down the road but it is hard to tell due to the cackalack noise and vibrations of the good ole 325HP PSD.
Hey Bubba,
So I have a question before I suggest anything. The noise you are referring to. You say it "sounds" like the power steering. Now, is this sound more like a pump sound, like a motor winding down, or is it now of a popping and metal sound?
The power-stearing pump and brakes are all working off the same line pressure I was told.
I just had my P/S pump replaced becuase it was "moaning"... but it didn't change... and I was told that it may not since all Fords due after they are broke in.
The brakes "pulse" due to working off the same line pressure.
It feels and sounds like the power steering pump noise when the wheel is cranked all the way in one direction or the other despite the fact that the wheels are pointing perfectly straight. So it sounds like it is working hard, slight vibration in brake pedal and moaning noises etc but nothing is happening. The normal noises I would expect from power steering when working. Now if I turn the steering wheel slightly clockwise and hold it there it goes away until I move it back.
I am also hearing squaking noises when turning the wheel drastically counter clockwise at no or very slow speeds (usually when parking). Not sure if the two are related.
I have a slight moan in mine also with truck in gear (drive or reverse) but foot still on brake. I can feel mine in the steering wheel, typically when I am manuvering to get out of a parking spot. It also seems to happen only when cold.
Not worried enough about it to take it in at this point in time.

Well... Sounds to me like two seperate issues. If it were me, I would take 5 minutes and tighten the trac bars in the front. Sounds like a bolt is loose and causing a metal "squaking/rubbing/popping" noise. Hopefully that will fix your popping. As far as the pump, well you can either drive it a while longer and see if you notice a difference in performance, or take it. But it probably is the power steering pump.
Sounds like a steering pump not putting out enough pressure. The hyroboost brakes also work off the same pump. The pump should feed through the hydroboost system then to the steering box. The steering pump should have a preset pressure regulator in it. I have seen other steering box's like a sagina box where the pressure regulator was not preset to the right pressure. I have also modified sagina pumps by increasing the spring pressure. I would not recomend that on yours I would let the service dept fix it.
