I have a 93 Ranger 3.0 with a M5R1 5spd tranny. It has not quite 100K on it and it is starting to give me problems going into 2nd and 3rd gear especially. I think maybe it is time for a rebuild. Does anyone know prices of having mine rebuilt or how much a rebuilt tranny costs? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks! Bob
I had a teardown/build done on my '98 5 speed two years ago. I've got the 2.5l 4 cyl., don't know the trans # offhand, but I'm sure Mazda had something to do with it.
This job was done on an aftermarket WARRANTY that I had to fight over for three weeks, but they paid because the shop backed me up (no abusive driving, maintained, etc).
The total job cost was about $850, including parts and labor. Needed a bearing and bushing kit. I had a scrape in the 2-3 shift, only after highway driving, hot engine and trans.
Been fine ever since.

I would check the fluid level of the tranny first.
If it is low you might check the 3 rubber caps on top of the tranny.
Those rot out at about 100,000 miles and cause leakage.
