I've got a 94 IDI Turbo Diesel and am looking into a possible upgrade. I straight piped the exhaust and my injector pump is turned up a flat. Also a K&N air filter. It's got power but I want more. (Don't we all). Anyway, I've been looking into the Banks Stinger kit and the ATS turbo upgrade kit. Both are about the same price and I've heard good things about both kits. But I wanted to hear what you guys thought about them before I make a purchase. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Also, how do you turn up the boost on the factory turbo.
I have a 90 7.3IDI w/aftermarket ATS system, identical to Ford 93/94 IDI turbos and I upsized to a 4" muffler from truck parts place 22" long and straight through, 4" pipe starts just behind turnback elbow beside trans. This seemed to change how quick the turbo responded. It also sounds better, now you can actually hear the turbo. The whole job cost me about 250 bucks and some labour but I had my own mig. Don't put on the banks unless you're planning on doing headgaskets regularly. Banks goes like stink for short period of time!
well I personally have a psd, but my uncle owns a 90 7.3 dsl, and one of thier friends has a 92 (I think) the friend of his bought the banks kit, and had my uncle help him put it one, then when my uncle bought his he went ats, and I helped it went on easier, and was a better built components (the banks kit looks like cheap sheet metal in my opinion) now that was several years ago, and banks may have improved but that is my only experience with both kits, and the ATS just looks like a better kit, and according to unc the ats went on better than the banks, now I know yours is already turbo, but I imagine the upgrades would be the same type of system and quality
Hi guys, I´m new to this forum, and personally have just bought a non -turbo ´91 7.3l engine with a E4OD trans. I would like to know what you guys think about the hypermax kit versus the ATS one(since it appears that the one from banks isn´t really that good. I live in Brazil, and it´s pretty hard to get any info about those kits here. I feel that I should mention that I´m going to put that combo in a ´94 Grand Cherokee. Don´t laugh please...
I feel i should warn you to SERIOUSLEY reconsider what you are thinking, a grand is a unibody vehicle, it WILL NOT take the stress that that motor will put on it, even in the stock form, let alone with a turbo on it.
Hi ryan, thanks for the input. I´m going to reinforce the unibody framerails and installing a cage to strenghten all the structure, and swapping out all the drivetrain... gonna put a dana 60 rearend and a dana 44 frontend. have still to decide about the transfer case... would like to have a fulltime one, thinking about a np242(if it´s srong enough) or a np203. I´ll put some custom springs on it to handle the extra weight(some 200Kg-440lb more) of the 7.3 IDI. what you guys think about the hypermax turbo kit vs. the ATS one?
hayfrmr318,
get a three inch exhaust and turbo outlet flange from ATS and put it on the stock Ford turbo. The Ford redesigned ATS turbo with the little downpipe and small outlet flange ruined the turbo performance.
zj318 if you are going to all that trouble keep on going a little farther, put a DANA 60 front axle in as well.
The 44 will not handle the weight or torque of the diesel very well.
I have a DANA 44 IFS in my F250 that I spend about 400 dollars a year on for new ball joints, tierod ends and U joints.

Hi Dave, thanks for the input. the problem with the dana 60 is that here in Brazil they are rare, expensive (some 5.000 US dollars), custom - built units, since trucks were never made with them here. In the other hand, good, used dana 44s can be obtained here for some 250 US dollars. So , I think I´ll put the dana 44s until I can find a reasonably priced used dana 60. I hope that the ZJ unibody will be easier on the dana 44 than a fullsize truck...
