f 150 7700 vs. f 250 ld
#2
same truck but the 250LD was produced from 97 thru 99, then it became the F150/7700 ........the reason they dropped the f250LD name is because of new F250 superduty, they didnt want to confuse us anymore then they already do......when i bought mine ,may she rest in peace,[see gallery for pics] i needed more towing than a standred F150 , but not the mileage of a F250 superduty.....soo it fit the bill just right. i got a lot of funny looks from f150 owners, alot of them thought I just stuck a f250 badge onit, till they looked at the 7 lug axles........then their eyes got even wider...

There are differences between 250LDs and 7700s. The 250LDs could come with a 4.6, manual transmission, and a 3.31 gear.... and a lower 7200 lb GVWR. The 250LD had many more options and configurations. The 4x4 7700s are factory rated for snowplows as a standard option, the 250LDs had a special option for the snowplow prep. The 7700s come standard w/ a 5.4 and auto. The tranny depends on the year and what Ford was feeling like. The 2002-2004 trucks had an E4OD standard. The rear was a 3.73 for most, but 2002-2004 also had a 4.10 gear option in the standard cab only.

I'd lean toward the '99 5.4 powered LDs and '00-'04 7700s. This gives you the PI heads on the 5.4L. The LD will need to be checked out to make sure you get the engine, tranny and gear package that was meant for towing : 5.4, auto tranny with cooler, tow package (7 pin and class III receiver) and at least 3.73s.
