I posted earlier in the week about havin trouble with my 2001 ranger trans. with low miles and sure enough I took it in and [guess what?] Yep, another bad valve body problem. Naturally I have to foot the bill. A guy I work with had the same problem on his 2000 Explorer with right around the same amount of miles on it. You would think Ford would do something about it.
For what it is worth my 2000 ranger is back in the shop for valve body replacement less than 3 days after having the valve bodies replaced. The original repair was doen at 70K mileage. Ridiculous!
Swapping out that auto for a 5 speed would start looking very attractive to me if I were in that situation.
Things like that are why I haven't owned a vehicle with a true automatic transmission in 4 years. They just aren't worth the hassle. At least with a manual, the most common problem is the clutch, and I can swap that out in less than a day in my own garage.
