whats the chances of finding a 428? im building a 74 f-250 highboy and originally i planned on puting a screaming 460 (514 or so) in there cause this trucks big and heavy (building a tube frame inside the orginal frame) and a 4'' sub frame at the springs droppin the t-case 6'' and its sittin on top of 6'' or more (i dont really know) suspention lift dana 60's front and rear and when the bank account gets fat enough... those new 49'' super swampers and o really want this truck to the most bad *** it can be. and 428 just has a better ring to it then 460
get on an online auto wrecking site or junkyard and see what they have in stock, thats where i was originally looking for my 351C and they had plenty of them. the 428 is more rare obviously, and you might have to pay a bit for it, but it will be worth it. also, make sure your mounts are going to match up, the cars of the 60s that had 428s had different mounts, and ive heard of plenty of people getting into trouble with that.
I think 67fastback is talking about the 2 vs 4 bolt motor mounts. This changed in 65 or 66. All FE's before that have 2 bolt mounts. Seeing the 428 came out in 65 or 66 they all have the 4 bolt mounts. I also think you'll be hard pressed to find a 428 in the bone yard unless the yard is old and does not move much scrap. But I'd have to say where you live would be key. Here in CT your luckey if you can score some K car parts as all the cars are stripped and scrapped quickly. Post some ads in the classifieds at Ford FE.com, FOMOCO obsolite, Club cobra etc....and search the classifieds also. I see 428's for sale all the time and you will too. It might take a little time but you'll find one. It searched for a year for my 406 and found it on the Ford FE forum in the classifieds. Look for the sandscratch "A" and "C" on the back of the 428 block. The "A" block was the std 428 and the "C" is the CJ block. Of course the service replacment block have no casting number at all and can be difficult to id from the outside. Check out this site as it will tell you alot about the 428 engines. www.428cobrajet.org Pay close attention to the block ID section. Do your homework and KNOW what your looking at some 428's and 390's share the same casting numbers. I use drill bits to gauge which cyl wall cores were used to cast the block. Some guys use allen wrenches. JMO,G.
