I have a 1987 ford f150 4.9, 4 speed manual trans, no a/c, 2 wd.
My Haynes manual has Bronco full size and f150 listed under the same wiring diagram. So are all the engine, trans. and electrical parts the same? Will a computer from a Full size Bronco, that matches the options i have fit in my truck? It must have a different oem part number? I think 1987 to 1989 are the same to?
Usually there is a difference if it has a manual or automatic tranny. There is also a difference in the computer as far as how many cylinders the engine has(it has a pulse train in the beginning of the code reading that tells you what engine should be connected).
If you want to see what the interchange is, go to partsamerica.com, autozone.com, napaonline.com, or someplace like that, and plug in your truck. Then look up the engine computer and write down the part number. If you happen to find another year truck that you want to swap computers with, plug in that truck and see if the part numbers are the same.
Most of the junkyards in my area take the computer out first thing, and some outfit picks them up. I would venture a guess that's what you are probably buying in the parts store after they test it out a little bit.
So when Autozone reads the trouble code it will also tell them the OEM number of my engine computer? There are no other oem number matches for my computer, eccept for a 5.0 engine. So i was woundering if i found a bronco that looked just like mine i could use that engine computer. I can't get codes from my computor i damage something ( signal return gets 6 volts now ) when getting codes. Should the truck run at all if the computor is bad, ground wire ( signal return) to all sensors, has to much voltage? if i know that it should not run at all if the computer is bad then i will check the fuel pressure first. With the computer it will start with starting fluid and run for 5 minutes, if i remove the computer and add starting fluid will it start also? Just woundering.
Thanks,
mike
