Could i buy an K&N air filter and then buy a Chrome filter tube (that i saw at autozone) and it work like a K&N air intake system? Does the tube make any difference or just the filter?
Are you looking for a whole new air induction system, or just a better filter? I just put a K&N into the air cleaner on my 1977 F250 tonight. It was a direct replacement for the old beat up disposable Fram filter element. Looking closely, though, the air cleaner top seems like it didn't close down tightly; maybe the K&N is a fraction of an inch taller than the previous filter element. Oh well, that should help the breathing, if anything.
The truck seems to run a bit better. When I tip into the throttle, I can hear the secondaries of the new 600 Edelbrock open up. There's a rising moan, like Capt. Kirk just ordered Warp 6, and we do get right down the road.
As far as I'm concerned, K&N is a winner. It's a better filter, that breathes better, and does not have to be thrown away.
I've got a k&n drop in and i just checked it 2 days ago to see the condition after a month and it was fine. I was surprised. The filter oil had caught all the crap (bugs, dirt and everything). Looks like I found a winner. I would still like to get one of those intake system tho. Maybe build my own.
I think it adds some power, but everyone has their own opinion on this mod.
If you do make your own intake, don't forget you have to make provisions for some sensors in the intake tube.
what i'm trying to say is, is Is (3x) the pipe that connects the engine to the air filter important? if i got a nobrand pipe that connected to a k&n filter, would it be the same as have a k&n intake system???...
K&N will tell you it's important -- since they're selling one. Anything that helps your engine breathe better is good. But I'd look for some objective reviews, to help me decide whether it's a worthwhile improvement.
i hardly think it will matter. see if they're the same diameter and if you can plug in all the necassary sensors, otherwise you could use cardboard tubing it wont matter
